Question Hopeless request RE: a children's book circa 1970

OK, all you trivia buffs and avid readers, if anyone can come through for me on this I will be SO happy (and SO surprised!!):

The book I'm looking for information on is about a black boy who wants a guitar. He starts to save money to buy one in a jar with a note taped to it that says "guitar money." In the meantime, he makes a guitar out of a cigar (or shoe) box with rubber bands.

Can ANYONE offer me any clues about the title of this book?

I've tried searching the Library of Congress card catelog and google.com, but I just can't find anything!

Could it be...?

The Boy from Nine Miles: The Early Life of Bob Marley (Young Spirit Books) (Hardcover)

It talks about him making a guitar from a cigar box... not sure about the "guitar money" part though.

Good Luck.

Thanks, Gina.

I googled it and it's not the one I remember.

I know this is impossible--it's just that now that I'm having a baby of my own, I'd like to read some of the books to him/her that influenced my young life (like this one--that taught me how to save my change for things I wanted to buy).

I was bored so I tried online and I bombed... but since you're a little more familiar than I am you might want to try abebooks.com they have a pretty good advanced search but I didn't find it.

There's a website called Loganberry Books that helps people look up forgotten titles of children's books, here's their URL: http://loganberrybooks.com/stump.html

Katrina--

Thanks, but nope! I checked that'n, too!

This is really unusual for me because I'm the type that NEVER forgets a book! I'm the one all my friends call with these kinds of questions.

Surely, eventually, I'll remember (yeah right!)

Is this a picture book or a chapter book? Do you recall? Any idea what age it is geared to? I know of a couple of good library listserves that might be able to help you if you're interested.

Wow, thanks to ANOther for the Loganberry link! I was able to use it to find a book I have been looking for for ages. All I could remember was that some kids find a stove, cook eggs, and become invisible. A search for "stove eggs invisible" and it came right up! (FYI, the book is called "M is for Mischief")

I was able to show it to my fiance, who I have mentioned the story to before and he never believed a book like that actually existed.

It has words, but it's not long enough to be a chapter book. I'd say it's geared toward 7-9-year-olds to read by themselves. I was probably 5-6 when Momma let me read it (or read it to me).

It was a library discard. I got it around the same time I got Many Moons, Quiet Street, and my 1st Flicka, Ricka, & Dicka book.

Hi 4myself, I've got a couple of emails out on some of the library listserves that I am on that may turn up something. I'll let you know if so.
