Is it even possible to do pushups when you are fat? I only hear of people succeeding at this goal when they get below 200lbs... but I never hear of a 200lbs+ gal doing marine style pushups successfully.
It all depends on how strong your chest and shoulders are. If you can bench press 200 pounds, you probably could do a pushup at 200 pounds. Most women aren't nearly that strong so need to drop down in weight (or do pushups on their knees) before they can push up their whole body weight.
Well I'm... (goes off to convert) 264pounds and I can do push-ups standing on my toes. Only about five, but I can do them.
You have to work yourself up to them. I've only just started this week, but I am reasonably fit for my weight (can run at 7km/h, X trainer at 12km/h for 10 min and can leg press 135kg) so I'm not sure if that's indicitive.
If you are working up to a full push up I have a hot tip...
I never liked the pressure on the knees it made me hurt (knee problems). Another way you can do them is elevated. Get a bench or a box or even against your bed. Put your hands on the box and feet on the floor. That's how I did them until I could do the full floor pushups.
Thanks every body... I'll keep trying and I will succeed. I think i will track how long it takes me to do them marine style. See how much body fat I will loose before I can get down and up- just once.
My BF was in the Navy and was showing some ways they had to do push-ups. OMG! He showed me one way, and he put his legs up on the sofa and his arms on the floor and he did like 25, so I tried...OMG! I could only do 1. I am so pathetic, LOL! I even hurt my wrist a little.... For shame.... This makes me wonder if I'll even be able to do them on a ball thingy....
Push-ups are actually my "secret" goal, there was a thread awhile back in the support section about everyone's secret goals. Between the weight and tendonitis, I don't remember the last time I was able to do a push-up!
Actually doing pushups on a ball are fairly easy. I like doing them. It really depends where you put your center of gravity on the ball. The further the ball is from your hips, the harder it is to do the pushup.
I use my exercise ball for a lot of my exercise as I watch TV. I bounce on it as I move my arms all different ways, I use it as I do weights, AND I do crunches and pushups using it. LOVE THAT BALL!
I can't wait to get one. I went to get one today @ Wally World and they were out of the 55 size that I need for my short self. They are ordering more, so I'll get it soon...I hope.
