I have bad knees due to my cheerleading days. They do a lot of grinding when I am bending them so I am concerned as to what kind of exercise I can do. Does anyone have any suggestions?
For some people, the elliptical trainer prevents a lot of the painful impact of cardio on the knees. I can use the elliptical way easier than I can, for example, run on concrete.
The other best exercises for knee pain all focus on strengthening the muscles that support the knee (quad, hamstring, etc). If you strength-train those muscles, your knees will slowly be able to take a little more weight-bearing exercise.
water based is good too. you can actually strengthen your knees through exercise.
Not that I am recommending this as a start, but for years I avoided running because I had a bad knee, and running improved my knee immensely. Turns out my biggest problem was I had really strong hams and quads, but the little tiny muscles that stabilize side to side movement were almost non existant. A slow increase in useage really helped them.
