Default could someone spell it out for me?!

Hi, i used to go to weight watchers but got tired of counting points and eventually quit. I have visited the LAWL website but it didnt really explain what it is. Is this program similar to weight watchers?? could anyone enlighten me as to what the program entails, benefits, drawbacks, etc... Also, if anyone has participated in both programs, would you say LAWL is better than weight watchers?? Thanks alot for your time!!

Okay -- LAWL won't tell you much until after you've signed up. I am on the program and have lost 81 pounds so far. My ONLY complaint is the expense. It IS $7 (or 5 or 3 whatever the special is) per week. BUT you pay in advance for weight loss and maintenance weeks. I DO LOVE the program and it works for me. They basically tell you types of foods to eat and portion sizes. Unlike WW, some things are off limits, but there are a lot of choices. WW did not give me enough restrictions -- that's just how I work .

thanks for the explanation! i have a couple more questions though... do you have to pay if you miss a week like in weight watchers? Also, does LAWL require you eat their food? Ive seen a few people posting about LAWL bars and such... thanks again

The only foods at the center are the bars and snacks (if you want them.) I cook everything or eat out or eat frozen food (duh -- not much else to do, right? ) Sorry to be kind of vague -- I don't know why it's such a secret. All I'll say is they really push the bars which are expensive. BUT I've bought them the whole time -- until recently. There are similar things in stores. Some people can't eat them for medical reasons and still do the program just fine. I like them because they give me a chocolate/sweet fix without cheating.

You don't pay if you miss a week -- you kind of just lose that week (as far as counseling sessions go). But if you've stayed on plan, you haven't lost anything but weight. If you go on vacation, etc., they can put you on hold so you don't have to buy extra weight loss weeks (especially if you've screwed up).

Hi Layla...welcome! :-)

I did WW for a while, too. It didn't really work for me because I didn't like calculating the points. Also, you can blow your allotment of points on a bag of chips if you feel like it.

With LAWL, they give you a color coded plan based on your weight, age and level of activity. The plan has a certain number of protein, fruit, veggie, starch, fat and condiment exchanges for each day. (The size of the portion can vary depending on your plan, too.) In addition, you get two LA Lite exchanges each day. An LA Light can be a protein bar, a shake, or one of their other products. You don't have to do the Lites; some people have allergies, or don't like them, or just feel they are too expensive. If you don't do them, you get bumped up to a higher plan with more food exchanges. When you eat something you make a note in your food diary to check off how many exchanges you've had so you keep track of what you've eaten.

When you first start the program, they will put you on two days of "Take Off" to jump start your weight loss and get your metabolism going. They'll give you a bottle of fruit juice that you drink diluted with water over two days. You can have a limited amount of protein, veggies and LA Lites during the two days. After Take Off you start normal eating on your plan. You don't have to do it again, but some people like it for an accelerated loss. There are variations of the Take Off that you can do during the program, some have unlimited protein and veggies and no Lites. They recommend that you wait at least 2 weeks between doing Take Off.

With LAWL you use real food that you can buy at the grocery store. If you've fallen into bad eating habits, the program can really train you in healthy eating. That's why people say it's not a diet - it's learning a new lifestyle. A lifestyle that you'll have to maintain in order to keep the weight from coming back.

You need to drink 8 glasses of water every day. The water is an essential part of the program.

Another part of the plan has you go to the center three times a week to weigh in and meet with one of the couselors. Weighing in 3x a week is really helpful for most people because it keeps you focused and there is some accountability during the week. I know that there were times I wanted to cheat but didn't because I knew I'd have to weigh in again in a day or two. The counselor will go over your food diary with you and make suggestions. They also take your blood pressure periodically, and your measurements about once a month.

The cost of LAWL can seem high at first because you're paying for it all up front, but for me it worked out to be less than the $15/meeting charge at WW. LAWL has a lot of "extras" you can buy - the LA Lites, salad dressings, cookbooks, supplements, etc. Most of the extras are pretty expensive and you can find similar things elsewhere for less. You're not obligated to buy the extras, but some centers really push them. If you have little or no sales resistance it can be difficult, annoying and expensive.

The centers vary. As I said, some are more geared to sales of LA products and others have a more laid back attitude. The counselors get some training from LA but, for the most part, they are not nuitritionists or dieticians. The ones at my center are very encouraging and sincere, but from what I've read that's not the case everywhere. If you have a question or need more information, there is a toll free number you can call. Or the counselors can contact specialists at their corporate offices.

I'm sure someone else can jump in and fill in whatever I've missed.

Good luck!! :-)

Layla - I've done both programs and for me LAWL works better; it's more disciplined; you are much more accountable to not only your counselor at the center, but also to keeping your food diary (which to me is a must do!). When you weigh in you sit with your counselor (one on one) and they review your diary (at least they should). A good counselor can be your best friend and teach you a lot. But, beware, as not all counselors are the same. Weighing 3 times a week also keeps me on top of the program. The last time I did WW (point system vs core), I was there for almost 4 months and I don't think I lost 10 lbs. I've been doing LAWL for just over 6 weeks and I've lost a little over 11 lbs (I'm 48 and want to lose 32 lbs total). You do have to pay for your weight loss weeks up front and that can be a staggaring number at first to see. But, it's worth it and in the long run, it's less than WW prices. I got a good deal on my LA Lite bars and I really like them, so I contribute to the local success of my LAWL center! It is a healthy, real food program and I highly recommend it.

Also....at least at my center, I was told that if I stay on program and lose the weight that I get a rebate at the end.....it was around $200! An extra incentive to lose weight.

I'm in my 5th week and down 14 pounds!

Thank you for your information. I am usually over at the 100 Plus forum and I have been on Jenny Craig for awhile and getting fustrated. I have an appointment tonight with LA Weight Loss, so I was curious as to how the program worked.

ChocLabLover- Good luck at your meeting!! Just remember you do not have to buy the bars, lites, or even supplements from them to do the program. They are optional. You can also buy weeks an add on to your program so you don't have to pay all weight loss weeks up front. I started out with just 30 pds or 50? I told them I wanted to make sure I could do the program first. Then when the weeks went on sale I bought more!

I don't know if this is appropriate to post, but my dh went in a couple of months ago but didn't sign up. Then a week ago they called or wrote and offered him the whole program for $199. By the time they added the juice concentrate and the blood work, it was $299. When he went in, they worked out a payment plan that was workable for us. (I'm doing it to but unofficially!) I don't know if this is out of the ordinary, but I'm really glad it happened!

Blood work? I didn't have any blood work done, neither did my husband. I don't even think they are allowed to take any blood.

My center does blood work too. I told them I wasn't comfortable with that, so they didn't take mine. I don't like needles and would especially not like them being used by someone that isn't either a doctor or a nurse. I would bet that they wouldn't refuse to take your money if you refuse to get the blood work done, so I wouldn't sweat it.

~~ First, Welcome and I have to say it is a good program ~~ However I have not had nearly as much success as the others (about 30ls since January, taking July off) --

I got in on the $3 special I also had to pay $99 for papwerwork / bloodwork and the first take off; they did my bloodwork (also claimed they had to do the bloodwork to determine which plan to put me on which was NOT true as I am allergic to latex and they couldnt do the bloodwork for a month. -- good way to ahve your starting cholesterol level.

I did well in the beginning, but when I started working out it really slowed down -- Also, here (mass) you only weigh in once a week -- in the beginning youc an do it more to get you on track, but technically its 1x a week.

For those of you who have lost 50+ this year .. please share your secrets to success / staying motivated. Do you exercise?

I'm much happier here than I ever was on ww -- too much freedom / and as much as I love to talk, I felt uncomfortable in the meetings

~~ Welcome again ~~~
