Why?!!

I have been trucking along - not being perfect but doing ok. Haven't lost a lot but developing new habits & being happy with that. Then last night for some crazy, bizarre reason I ordered a pizza - extra cheese & of course ate half of it all on my own.

This is a habit I used to have & do regularly (& one of the reasons I am so large) & thought that was behind me. Anyone have some words of wisdom to help me stopping beating myself up for the slip? I hate it when I do something I know full well is stupid!

old habits are hard to break. Especially binge eating. Beating yourself up over it never works, i've been there. Not one person on this board eats perfect every single day so remember that. Just identify what it is that make those "imperfect" days for you and try to curb it in the future. Maybe keep one mini frozen pizza in your freezer and make that the next time you feel the binge beast knocking. Then wait a half hour and decide if you really really want to order a pizza.

I used to do the same thing at my highest weight. I would order a pizza and bread sticks and take them back to my room and eat half the pizza and all the breadsticks. I havent done that since 2002. Once you break the habit it gets easier I promise.

I am REALLY bad to beat myself up over stuff like that. What i do to get over it, is look at how many calories, points, or whatever i feel that i "went over the limit"...then i figure out, okay, to make it so that i didnt cheat, i will eat X amount LESS per day for the rest of the week so that those calories didnt do my any harm by the end of the week, or next week, whenever. Or you could tack on extra exercise for the next few days, that would equal the extra food that you took in. So like if you ate 600 extra calories that day, okay, you eat 100 calories less than you would have for the next 6 days. That could be one less piece of cheese per day, one tbls of peanut butter instead of two, or any extra 10 minutes to your walk each night...find a way to cut those corners and then the pride of that accomplishment will outweigh the cheating and by week's end, you will have made up the difference. :-)

How about "stuff (substitute another word here if you like) happens?" And, frankly, no matter how much weight you lose, it's occasionally going to happen. It's how you pick yourself up and move on that shows how much you've changed. And, except for beating yourself up a bit, you've gone on, right?

My DH ordered pizza the other day because he was craving it, and I asked him to make half of the medium pizza thin-crust veggie. I thought, okay, I'll eat three pieces and put the rest in the refrigerator. Well, I ate the entire half, and felt really crummy. I've been at this weight loss thing for a while now, and even though I'm close to my goal, I still do stuff like that. So please don't beat yourself up too badly--even those in the maintenance forum have slips every once in a while.

Thanks for all the support.

Another way to look at it is this: Just counting your meals in a week you have 21. If you only overate at that one meal, that means you ate well for 95% of the time. Not too bad. I've read somewhere that as long as you eat healthy 90-95% of the time you will succeed. HTH

Wow - that's a great way to think about it. I like that!

barbygirl, I love that way of thinking about it too. Thanks
