Staying on track on vacation......

  • OK, people, I am going on vacation on Thursday - I am seriously excited - and I need some help to figure out an eating/exercise strategy.

I am going to visit my friends in Uganda (more like family, really), for 2 weeks. I was there for a month last Christmas, and lost 3lbs.....I have no idea how, since I ate a lot and did minimal exercise. Am I the only person in the world who lost weight over Christmas?????

The good thing is that there is no junk/processed food, and no desserts. The fruit is fantastic (mangoes, papaya, pineapple), and they eat a lot of fish, chicken, pork. The tough bit is that their food is mainly carb based - so lots of rice, cassava, millet bread, matoke. They have delicious groundnuts, and make great groundnut sauce.....

I guess I am thinking of an approach of

    a) eating in moderation, and filling up on fruit and protein
    b) swimming a couple of times a week, depending on where we are staying
    c) walking for half an hour in the evenings
    d) dancing 2 or 3 nights a week
    e) not worrying/thinking about it too much, and having a great time

I think that what is making me a bit anxious is that normally I have almost total control over my food and exercise choices.......in Uganda I don't, partly because the food is very different (and I love it!), and partly because I am staying with friends, and we will be travelling and staying in hotels/hostels/lions dens ( ).....
  • If you stick to the plan you have here, you'll have NO problems!
    Have a *wonderful* trip!
  • sounds like a great plan!! enjoy yourself!!
  • Hey claire... I think you have a pretty good plan going here and I have all the confidence in the world that you'll do wonderfully on vacation!

Enjoy yourself and have a great time!

Claire, sounds like a fabulous trip!! And your plan to respond to the food challenge looks excellent. Just try to stay mindful of the protein piece, since you anticipate an emphasis on the carbs, and then just watch your portion sizes. But then, you knew that.

Have a WONDERFUL time!! Can't wait to hear all about it when you return!
  • Have a wonderful time, Claire! You'll do just fine.
  • Uganda! How cool is THAT?! Bring back stories!
  • Claire, I know you'll have sooooo much fun! Just try to stay on your plan, but dont let it rule your vacation. Go out dancing, and see the sights ; you'll be fine! Im having a "mommy" moment: Have fun, be careful, and always wash your hands! Oh, and bring us some fresh pineapples and mangos!!
  • Claire,

You'll do fine! And you know what... if you do slip a couple times and have some treats.. that's fine too! Its a VACATION - you're allowed to have a couple!

Enjoy yourself honey! Have the time of your life and be sure to share all the details when you get back!
  • Thanks, guys.......I'lle be thinking of you when I am being chased by all those mountain gorillas, LOL! (Hmmm.....now that would be good exercise, huh?)
  • LOL too funny (mountain gorillas). Enjoy yourself.
