Default Question on Calories.. All you experts please reply!!

If a products nutrition label states that there are zero calories per serving, and you used more than the serving size would it still remain zero calories?

I use Parkay butter spray -or- I can’t believe its not butter spray. The serving size for each is 5 sprays for cooking 2 sprays for topping. Both are zero calories.

Sometimes, when I am cooking chicken and I want to get a simulated “fried” taste I will take the top off the spray bottle and pour about two or so teaspoons into the pan. Would you think that it would still be zero calories? If there is less than one calorie in a serving size are food companies required to list what amount of caloric value is in the product?

I’d like to know what you think. Any experts out there on this?

Gretchen - Do you use Fitday? Whenever I add something that is 0 calories per serving and I enter in that I had more than a serving.. It does usually add a couple calories.. but not a whole lot...

It could well have more than zero calories when you increase the serving size. "Zero" is not a literal term; they are allowed to say zero if the serving size, as they have named it, yields less than one calorie. The more you use, the greater risk you run that the caloric value is no longer nill. In the scenario you described, I don't think we're talking gobs of calories, but you still want to be aware of what you're doing so that you can proceed with full knowledge.

Maybe I should write to the company to get the true caloric value of a serving size. I sometimes get carried away with that stuff if I am cooking a meal for a number of people and I don't want to be using unnecessary calories if I don't have to be.

I "boosted" this from another message board:

FYI--
This is the info I go from the company a few months ago on the I can't
believe it's not butter spray:

12.5 sprays 10 calories 1g fat
25 sprays 20 calories 2g fat
37.5 sprays 30 calories 3g fat

If I were you, I would just use a healthier fat sparingly. A lot of those "fake" fats have trans fatty gob in them, and it would just be better for you in the long run to use just a teensy bit of something healthy instead.....I get really crispy chicken (little crunchy dark bits and everything) in my nonstick pan with just a whisper of olive oil. Just a thought.

I have a spray bottle for olive oil that produces a fine mist. It's great because you can coat a pan or some food with less than a teaspoon. It's also healthy fat and it adds a lot of flavor.
