I must be in denial
I've lost about 40 lbs so far... This morning I'm going through my clothes and I come upon a t-shirt someone gave my husband from a recent vacation. I take the t-shirt and think "This will fit me... It's huge. It might even be loose." I tried it on and I could barely get it over my boobs. I felt like a sausage. I swear, it really looks huge. I guess I'm just in total denial regarding my current size. Sheesh!
Sorry... Just a rant...

Geez... sorry to hear that.. give it some time. Looks can be deceiving. Wait for your next significant weight loss and try it again. Sounds like you might have something to give you a push. Fitting into that shirt
good luck!!

I'm sorry! That's a crappy feeling.
I don't think you're far from being *normal*-weighted. I don't mean normal as in ideal bmi, but normal as in not looking out of the norm, kwim? I am 5'0" and 175 and I really feel that although I'm still heavy, I'm not at all shocking looking. I'm fitting into normal sized clothes now, rather than plus. And I'm able to sit comfortably and even cross my legs. You're four inches taller, so I think you're right around the corner, maybe as little as 15 pounds or so, from being a lot more comfortable.

I had the exact same experience the other day--thought a shirt would be huge--um yeah, it was very, very snug. Boo!

I did that the other day, too. I thought a button down would fit and it wouldn't button around my chest. Whoops!
Look at the bright side, if you keep on keeping on that shirt will soon be too big for you!!

40 lbs is significant! try on a shirt you used to wear at that size, I'm sure you'll see a big diff!
I've the done the "this shirt should fit" thing too, btw

What has probably happened is that you've lost the 40 pounds evenly all over your body. At the beginning, this isn't as big a difference as we'd like it to be in clothes sizes. I went down 30 pounds before I had to do something about getting smaller clothes. 250 to 220. But more recently, but from 190 to 175, I actually lost 2 pants sizes. And these are all the same brand of jeans, so it should be fairly accurate. Right now I wear a men's Large tee shirt nicely, but if I had more boobage, I'd probably need an XL. That makes a difference, too. Hang in there. You're at the point where you will really start to see the difference in clothes. Read the post that I linked below. It explains a lot.

I have zero sense of what is going to fit me at this point. Things that look big to me can be too small, things that look small can fit fine. I think it is going to be a long process to re-train our eyes, plus it's a moving target anyway.
As for this particular shirt, never under estimate the boobage. I'm still wearing mostly 2X tops because the 1X ones are mostly still too tight in the boobs. I went down one band size but up a cup size, so nope, they aren't shrinking at all!
I'm guessing that you just haven't lost weight in your boobs either (but I bet that you are wearing smaller pants now!)

I think we've all been there at one point. However, the good part is like others said if you keep on working on it you WILL get into that shirt!
I really believe it's very difficult to tell your size as you lose weight. We don't see ourselves every second of the day and, really, only when we bother to look in the mirror do we see ourselves. It's hard for us to adjust our mental images of ourselves to what's showing on the outside. It takes time and I think we've all been guilty of seeing ourselves as either a lot smaller/larger than we really are.

I hear ya! I hate to try on clothes that "might" fit because it's such a psychological let-down when that happens. But I agree with cfmama - at least if you like the T-shirt. (Kind of hard to get excited about fitting into something you're indifferent about wearing, even if it is an indicator of how far you've come.) It's way fun to fit into something that you remember being so tight before.

Thanks everyone! It's good to know I'm not alone. I am definitely confused about what will or won't fit. I will hang it on the back of the door now. I'm not crazy about the shirt but it's just the idea. I WILL get into it... SOON! For now I will definitely blame it on the boobage, lol. It might not be true, but it will make me feel better.

Karen, another thing to take into account are different brand clothes fit differently.
