2nd blow of the day....

I am not as tall as I thought I was!!! I have a very distorted body image apparently. Not only have I been in denial about how fat I was (until seeing pictures) apparently I have height issues too. I thought I was 5'6" but I am barely 5'4" - WTH is going on with me? Could I have shrunk as I gained weight? Is the fat compressing me? LOL Seriously? I am in shock and denial - I cannot accept that I am not 5'6".

I am barely 5'4" too. It's an ok height :). I know it sucks cause it messes with your BMI, but just think of all the benefits of being short! You can get people to do stuff with you and guys are always taller :)

UGH! I hadn't thought of that! I just changed my height on Fitday and my BMI went up - while my healthy weight range went down by 9 pounds and now that stupid arrow is higher up on the "obesity"range. This sucks.

Maybe I thought I was tall because I wore heels for years and years? I just told my husband about what has happened and he laughed because he has always told me I am a "shrimp" and I would always argue with him. I thought he was just trying to make himself feel taller. He's 6 ft even.

Women do tend to shrink a bit as they get older but I think that's well after menopause so I doubt that's what is happening to you.

I grew 2 inches in my mid 20's. Through highschool and up till around age 24 I was 5'4". By the time I was 28 I was 5'6". I grew one of those inches in the space of 2 weeks right before I turned 28 (this is all according to the doctor's measurments). I'm still holding at 5'6" nearly 25 years later.

Shrinking 2 inches during adulthood is just as uncommon as growing 2 but it can happen. I think shrinking is usually associated with physical injury though.

I'd measure again. I too thought I was 5'6 for a long time, turns out I'm between 5'-5" and 5'-5 1/2" depending how I measure. One time even measured myself at 5'-4" but I think there was something wrong with that thing :)

Onederchic 07-25-2010 04:16 PM

For some reason, the majority of my teen and early adult life, I had believed I was 5'4", not sure where I even pulled those numbers from but anyway..when I was 32, I got a job at a federal prison so I had to have a complete physical and they told me I am 5'2" and just barely at that :o

ORSewmama 07-25-2010 04:43 PM

What time of day did you measure? Just throwing that out there - I'm 5'8.5" at the end of the day when I'm tired. I'm 5'9" or a smidge over in the morning. It's so weird. And I can tell also if I take a shower later in the day - that's where i notice I FEEL shorter - I can just tell.

You know, I went through exactly the same "ordeal" just a few months prior. I also thought I was 5'6" until I decided to measure myself to see if I had grown any taller since high school. Turns out I'm somewhere between 5'5- 5'4" ...so I can totally relate to the shock! I'm hoping it's the excess weight that has made me shrink a bit if that's even a possibility. That, or, they didn't do a very good job of measuring me in high school lol. Also! I'm in my 20's, so I can't attribute the possible shrinkage to age, YET... ><

I'm shrinking too - used to be 5'9". Now I'm barely 5'8".
Doctor sent me in for a bone scan because he couldn't believe I had lost so much height.

Bone scan was fine.

I'm with TXMary2, I think being fat for so longer has pulled my spine down or something.........:D

It's ok to be short. I've been short all of my life. 4'10" and wouldn't have it any other way.

TXMary2 07-25-2010 09:04 PM

OK- it isn't as bad as I thought, but I am still not 5'6" - I am 5'5 1/4" I went to my mother's house and had her boyfriend properly measure my height. So, good new is I am not 5'4" but I am not 5'6" either. What a day. I am mentally drained. LOL Actually, it is physical. I did 30 minutes on the treadmill, an hour swimming at the pool and over 30 minutes chasing chickens. Don't ask.
