Default In Defense Of Food

Has anyone read this book? I saw the author on the Daily Show and found him funny and engaging and he made common sense! I'm only about 20 pages in but I'm hooked. It's basically an examination of how, as a society, we're completely obsessed with nutrition on the one hand, and more obese than ever before in history at the same time! It's really quite fascinating, how we shovel in the 100 calorie pre-packaged chips or cookies but are still morbidly obese, it's crazy how far we've gotten away from "real food" It's a fun and informative read if anyone's looking for a new book I'm loving my e-reader!

Sounds like a book I would want to read. Thanks for the summary and the review.

That is a good read! Isn't it the basis for that documentary Food Inc.?

I read it. I do like his "omnivore's delimma" much better though. They both are very similar.

Read it recently, and devoured it! Great book, and food for thought.

Yep - this and his other book (An Omnivores Dilemma) are must-reads, IMO, to anyone wanting to learn more about food production in the US. Those, along with Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver, convinced me to go local with as much of my produce as I can, and it tastes SO much better (and I believe is better for me).

I can't wait until the farmer's markets open up here again! The food is so much better, and most of them take foodstamps now. The only local stuff around during the winter is VERY expensive, at the pricey grocery store I only go to for cheese. Their prices also drop in warm weather, for produce, anyway.
