I love to hang out and listen to top 40 music like Gaga, Beyonce, the Black Eyed Peas, the kittycat Dolls etc but I just can't work out to it. I think maybe possibly I speed up my steps to match the beat and then get exhausted fast. . . And also I feel like my heart rate is more out of control with the thumping beats but that's probably psychological.

My runner friend liked Boom Boom Pow by Black Eyed Peas and Lose Yourself by Eminem for running. I, on the other hand, like to run to sedate, easy listening, lazy Sunday music (if I'm not listening to a podcast or watching tv).
My favourites are:
Brighter than Sunshine by Aqualung
Bubbly by Corrine Bailey Rae
Love Remains the Same by Gavin Rossdale
Anything by The Fray, Jason Mraz or Corrine Bailey Rae
And for some reason, generic really sad, depressing ballads (I think they give me the sense I actually have something to run from like a real reason to run).

In general I feel calmer when I run to slow music and I think because my mind is calmer, my body is calmer and sort of "downed" by the low tempo of the music, so I feel like I have more stamina and don't feel as breathless as I do with more up-tempo music.

Ooh, I like this thread! Lots of things I've never heard of, but am def going to check out. Here's the first 5 tracks from my Gym mix on random:

The Monkees, 'Valleri'
Lady Antebellum, 'I Run to You'
Miguel Bose, 'Don Diablo'
Dwight Yoakam, 'Honky Tonk Man'
Trace Adkins, 'Hillbilly Rich'

Wow, that is random! I try and pick stuff that's energetic, to keep my pep up, or else quirky, to keep me amused.

My workout music runs the gamut too (but so does my musical taste). Current playlists -

For cardio:
Battleflag - Lo Fidelity Allstars
Ladylike - Storm Large & the Balls
Little Black Backpack - Stroke 9
Stranglehold - Ted Nugent
2000 Light Years Away - Green Day
Feel Good Inc. - Gorillaz
Smooth Criminal - Alien Ant Farm
Radio Radio - Elvis Costello
Big Girl (You Are Beautiful) - MIKA
Country Grammar - Nelly
Mother Mary - Foxboro Hottubs
Tattooed Love Boys - Pretenders
Radiation Vibe - Fountains of Wayne

For warmup/cool down:
Big Poppa - Notorious B.I.G.
Street Spirit - Radiohead
Marlene Dietrich's Favourite Poem - Peter Murphy
My Lover's Prayer - Otis Redding
Storm - Jose Gonzalez
Wonderful World - Israel Kamakawiwo'ole
Weight of My Words - Kings of Convenience
My Favorite Regret - Gigolo Aunts

I don't, of course, listen to all of these in one workout because I don't work out for 19 hours straight but I have been jumping around these tracks lately. As soon as I get bored, it's new playlist time!

I'm old-fashioned in my tastes. Linda Ronstadt works for me. ("It's So Easy," "You're No Good," "Just One Look") Right now I need a moderate pace, which her songs tend to be, and her Very Best Of album is so arranged that the slow songs ("Blue Bayou, Ooh Baby Baby") tend to come in right when I need a cooldown! When cardio is finished and I go to strength training, there is also a cluster of slower songs near the end. There are 21 cuts on the CD and my last workout, I almost made it all the way through all of them.

I've also been testing other CD's in our collection to see how well they will work. Eventually my body will adjust, and I'll need a change of pace.
