Default Has anyone successfully lost 100 pounds, then gained

Has anyone successfully lost 100 pounds, just to gain most of it back, and then lose it again? Losing 100 pounds was a very hard feat. But I did it. Over the course of 2 years, about 8 years ago. I slowly gained 80% of that back thanks to horrible social anxiety, and unwanted attention. I am wondering if anyone has successfully re-lost weight?

Hi Sara,

Yep.. been there done that and working on undoing that... I lost over 100lbs about 9 years ago on a very low calorie doctor supervised diet that was not sustainable. Where I went wrong was I didn't have a maintenance plan in place and ate like a jerk. I rationalized that I was exercising and could get away with it. That worked until I got married, moved to another country, and allowed myself to stress eat and stopped exercising. The worst part was I didn't try to stop gaining after I had gained 40 lbs within the first two years of stopping the diet, nor did I stop myself from gaining when I was up 60lbs; it took until I had regained it all for me to do something after having done so for three years! Last January, I had enough and I started a program that was intense and while I was fairly successful at it (lost 60lbs), it was not sustainable.

Now, I am taking my initial 60lb loss and after maintaining it through the holidays, I have kickstarted my loss with a more balanced approach. I'm tracking my food in an app, making sure I exercise at LEAST 30 minutes a day (usually in the form of a walk), drinking my water and making sure my diet is balanced. I've been doing this since October and now am up to adding running and yoga to my exercise options. I took it slow and steady. I know it is frustrating to not see immediate changes, but it does come in time. I'm halfway to my goal and have every confidence that I can do this. I know you can too!!

Yup. Right there with you. I lost 85lb about 6 years ago and then maintained for a short while. Then gained it all back over time. Like other posters, it didn't really hit me until I'd gained it ALL back. Then I spent a couple years being really mad at myself for screwing up. Now here we are - 2018. It's time to do something. The advantage this time is I know it can be done. I did it once already.

Yes, I lost 100 pounds in high school and got into a normal weight range. I gained up to 400 pounds and at 25 years old was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I lost down to about 215-230, I don't recall exactly. Then I gained back up to 300 and lost back down to a normal weight range. I have gained some back but I am still trying to lose some of the gain. My thyroid numbers are back out of range again. Hopefully I can lose some, again. But I don't want to get as low as I was the last time.

Thanks all. It is really difficult to know I put on so much of what I lost. The one silver lining is KNOWING it can be done, because I have done it. I know with a good support system is believing in myself it can be done again! It's just such a big mountain. But one step at a time.....

I can not successfully lose weight, so I have nothing to regain, but I do take comfort that I have stayed in the 200 lb range for about the past 20 years. This is probably due to the fact that I am always trying to lose. I'm not happy weighing this amount, and it probably contributes to my health problems. I have heard so many negative things about losing weight and maintaining the loss long term. It can be done, but the success rate it very low. Our bodies just want to put that weight back on, and the people I know who have maintained find it to be a daily struggle.

We all just need to keep working on this!!!

Like a couple other people who have responded, I have lost and regained many times, sometimes to the tune of 100 pounds or more. I started again at 263 in April of 2016, had lost down to about 140 by the next April, and have maintained below 160 since then. Except for last Thursday, when I was 161. Trying to take it seriously this time and get back down to 140. My goal is to stay below 160 for the rest of my life.
