Default Because if I type it up I'll be able to actually do it

I made a salad for myself; the "recipe" comes from an improvised but yummy salad a friend and I came up with last week. I halved it because, well, there's only one of me!

Well, now I can't finish it. Whereupon (I love that word...yes I'm a nerd) the following thoughts come:

1. I should finish it because there are starving children in Africa.
2. I should finish it because I've always been taught to finish my plate.
3. I should finish it because I've had no appetite for the past week and haven't eaten very much at all and really I should just eat something.
4. I'm full. I should throw the rest away.

So I'm going to do 4. And when I read this thread later, I will know that I did 4.

(If I say it often enough I'll actually do it too!)

Ok back to your regularly scheduled programming

A funny-ish quote that I think I may have seen right here at 3FC comes to mind, I can't remember it exactly.....

"I was always told to clean my plate. That there were starving kids in Africa. Here I am 25 years later - still fat - and there's still kids starving in Africa."

I'm taking it there was no option number 5 - to save the other half for another time (or you're afraid that you'll eat it, though not hungry). If so, number 4 seems the right way to go!!! Better to throw it in the garbage can then BE the garbage can. Good job for stopping and THINKING before doing. It's hard to change old ingrained habits - but that's what it's all about - establishing NEW habits - and you are definitely on your way. Good job!

I'm voting for that missing #5, too.

I'm glad you were able to pull the plug when you really felt FULL!!

I agree that you made the right decision! Unless you'll be packing up your leftovers and shipping it in a box to the starving children in Africa, it really won't matter if you throw it away. They won't be eating what's left on your plate anyways.

Good job for making the right decision!

Thanks guys!

There was only a tiny bit left, not enough for keeping it to be worth the effort. I tossed it out and drank a litre of water to keep my mind off it.

Another good thought that I believe that I found here is this:

Waste is waste, it can either be waste in a garbage can or waste on your waist.

I think about that one a lot when I'm tempted to finish something so we don't waste it.

I am with you there. I am more likely to follow through with something if I write about it, another tool to use.

I also feel just awful tossing away food. But if you do your best to prepare just enough and honestly try and use your leftovers, etc. sometimes it's just going to happen.

My goodness, the thought that we should keep eating because somehow our leftover stuff is connected to children in Africa is logically ridiculous. And I think its ingrained in many of us.

You do your best and then may have to toss it. You certainly can't just keep eating because others are starving.

Robin, I LOVE THIS! I'm going to get it tattooed on my hand so I'll see it when I'm trying to shovel grub into my face.

Thanks - I mean, I knew this, but years and years of it being drilled into me is hard to shake off.

This reminds me of the joke in our family.Someone was worried about "wasting" food by throwing it away, but if you think about it the food turns
to waste even when you eat it Twisted I know but that's my family for
you LOL I also forgot to mention that the person concerned is obese.
So it's definitely better to let it go to waste by tossing it out instead of eating
it. Well Done!

Ok, I need to change my cooking habits! Because I've done the same tonight (pasta with veggies and basic sauce) - too much for me (could be all the water I've been guzzling though ), enough to put in the fridge for tomorrow.

Sheesh, it was only half a cup of pasta! I'm having to downsize everything!
