I have studied (and tested) various eating styles from traditional american diet to raw foods. I am grateful for my experience with all of them because it has helped me learn about what my body needs.
I put no restictions on myself nor do I 'define' my diet.
I eat mostly vegetarian with some salmon and an occasional blt thrown in there. I try and avoid soy and rigorously source animal (and non animal) foods from reputable sources that support free range, grass fed, wild, hormone free (you get the idea).
Its just as easy to eat crap as a vegetarian.
As for losing weight on a vege diet, I think that would only be the case if you consumed a lot of unhealthy meats and then replaced all the meat with healthy veg options. But I think that's true with any eating style (replace junk with healthy stuff)
My advice- make sure to keep your iron and b vitamins in good standing, if you start to feel sluggish, those two are likely the culprets.
Lentils and quinoa are literally my best friends.
You can up their nutritional value by sprouting them first (sounds more intimidating then it is).
I make lentils into everything I would have eaten meatwise-hamburgers, sloppy joes, shepherds pie.
Get some good cookbooks that emphasize vegies as a main course not a side
I've had good luck with raw cookbooks and mediteriannian cook books.
