Rock Climbing?

  • I'm approaching my b-day and I think it's time to change something up!

So I was thinking about rock climbing (specifically a type called bouldering).

Anyone have experience with this? I'm thinking of going to an indoor gym to talk to someone.
  • Oh my... A few months ago, I really wanted to start rock climbing but wanted to lose more weight first... sigh... it hasn't happened... I need to kick some butt. (Let us know what you found out)
  • My bf just started taking me bouldering and even though I'm not every good I'm really enjoying it. I find it more comfortable then traditonal wall climbing (no wedgie from the harness - bonus!). I also enjoy the fact that I'm not relying on some one else. I would definately talk to some one at a climbing center. Most of the ppl that work there are huge into climbing and should be very knowledgable.

It's always fun to try new things. Have fun!
  • Good question Jess

Rudy rock climbs quite a bit. My Brother in law just built himself his own climbing area at his house!

You know, there are a lot of female rock climbers out there, I think we'd be naturally good at it because women have more powerful lower bodies.

But alas, although I've wanted to try it, I don't think there's any way I'd be able to hold my own weight on my arms at this size, and I guessing they don't' even make harnesses in my size! Don't know for sure, though!

I look forward to hearing what you learn!

  • I did a rock climbing session (once LOL). It was on one of those walls, although the wall was outdoors. My weight was 175 at the time.
They put you in a harness, but the ground person doesn't pull you up - they only stabilize you.
My legs were fine, but my hands got really, really tired. I probably could have gone higher if it wasn't for my hands. They got too weak to grip and pull. And my arms were pretty shaky, too.
It was kind of scary being up high LOL!

I might do it again some time.
  • I tried rock climbing at our gym for my birthday! It was FUN! It was much harder on my arms than I thought it would be. I think I wasn't using my legs enough. But it was a real high (ha ha) to make it all the way to the top!!!

It is harder the more you weigh, just because you have more to haul up, but I say give it a go!
  • Nelie, sometimes I think we share a brain.
  • I work at a rock climbing gym and rock climb inside and outside.

Are you thinking of trying bouldering inside or outside? Are you going with anyone that has bouldered/climbed before?

Please please ask as many questions as you want, I'd love to answer them

And for those of you thinking about going rock climbing, you should try it! It's so much fun!
  • Jessica,

Sometimes I think we do although I'm not the triathelete
  • Climbing means going UP. Leaves me out. What goes up must come down and I'm afraid of the down part. :-)
