Default Does peanut butter expire?

I've had some peanut butter in my fridge for a couple of months now, and it still looks good. Is it okay to eat? or should I just toss it?

You are amazing!! I don't think I've ever had peanut butter last that long to even ponder that question!!

I don't think so, especially in the fridge -- I think PB lasts quite a while.

Thanks!! I think the last time Ive eaten peanut butter was years ago. I dont even know why I bought it!!

I just noticed it was in the fridge, and I thought to myself, Hey that sounds pretty good for breakfast since I bought some bananas. But knew it has been there for a while.

Look on the jar. Most peanut butter has a date on it - it does last for a long, long time but it will get stale and because it has oil in it, the oil will go rancid before it petrifies into cement.

If you bought the grind your own fresh kind and it's sat for a while, the oil might have separated to the top. Just give it a quick stir.

If you've only had it a couple of months, it should still be good.

If it's not the "natural", freshly ground, no preservatives kind, it will last a very long time. I don't even keep mine in the fridge (who can spread it when it's cold! ). I think the longest I've had any around is a little over a year and it's still been fine as long as the lid is kept tight.

If it's "Natural" PB, then I think it will probably go rancid faster, but certainly not after 3 months in the fridge

.

You'd be able to tell if it's gone off by the horrible smell. Since it's been in the icebox, it should be fine.

There should be an expiration date on it somewhere, although it might be hard to find. Try on the bottom of the jar or on the rim of the metal cap, or on the label itself. You are smart to keep it in the refrigerator - it will last longer that way.

If you can't find a date, let your nose tell you - take a good whiff - if it smells purely like peanuts, then it's ok. If it smells off in any way (that's the rancid oil) then throw it out.

btw, if it doesn't smell ok even if it's within the expiration date, throw it out.
"when in doubt, throw it out"
