Default Since oatmeal was such a hit....

....can ya'll tell me about flax? I've heard Dr. Oz sing its praises and I did buy a box of "Milled flaxseed" but haven't been brave enough to try it yet. Does it have flavor? Can you add it to anything? And how much should be added?

OMG! Flax is a wonderfood! It has a slightly nutty taste, so goes great in yogurts, salads, smoothies, anything you would like nuts in. It CAN be gritty, so start small and work up. It also has a pretty good fat count, so make sure you watch portion sizes. We use it here, we LOVE it, its so full of healthy fats. Matt puts 2 Tbsp's or more in a glass of milk and drinks his, but he's weird. My kids love it, they want it on everything. I also like it as a "crust" for some Fiber-One goodies. Instead of cherry pie, use Fiber one cereal and some flax, with light butter and make the crust then pour in sugar free fruit filling. YUMMY! We also use it in yogurt we then partially freeze and top with fruit and a tsp of honey for a cheesecakey dessert. Try small and try it in different things to see what you might like it with.

I love the flaxseed as well. Although I usually buy products that have it already in it (crackers, cereals, tortilla chips). But I have added it to salads for a nice crunch.

I add it to my oatmeal and to my yogurt. I buy the seeds and grind it fresh in my little coffee grinder!

Because of its high fat content, it can also replace some oil in baking (the box I bought it in says that ). I've been experimenting with replacing 1/4 to 1/2 the oil in baking with milled flax, and it works fine.

I use flax in baking in place of eggs and it makes me supremely joyous when baking.

1 tablespoon flax with 3 tablespoons water.

I grind it up in a mixer until it is mushed to little pieces mixed with water.

Default Flax

I was happy tyo read your report on flax. I have tried to add flax oil--I use it on salds rather than Olive oil sometimes. I will try some of the ways you mentioned. Thanks.

Hi Kimberly!

Kashi makes these great oatmeal raisin cookies- with flaxseed! How's that for yet ANOTHER WAY to get in some oatmeal! They are 130 calories apiece, BUT one cookie and a cup of milk makes a WONDERFUL, FILLING snack! I had two for breakfast the other day!

I found a wonderful, all natural peanut/flax blend. Its called "Naturally More" and it is lower fat, lower sugar, and has flax for omegas. And it is YUMMY.
