Any new foods you've been surprised you like?

  • Some of you were here when I discovered I love beets. I never ate them before because I thought they grew in cans and I hate canned veggies. I LOVE fresh ones now! And today I had my first blood orange. I could cry for all the blood oranges I've missed in my life! They are a little bit of heaven...

Are there any new and healthy foods you've been pleasantly surprised to find you like? I'm always looking for new ideas as one of my goals is to challenge myself to be able to walk through the produce department and be able to say I've tasted it all.

Sometimes you try and find it's icky - I had to try brussel sprouts for myself (my mom refused to have them in the house). Well, my mom was right. At least I found out for myself rather than making assumptions.
  • Spaghetti Squash

,Love to use it instead of pasta....
  • What does a blood orange taste like???????
    Must try it
  • I saw the subject line and thought, oh, I should mention that, sadly, I discovered I like passion fruit syrup from Hawaii. But then I read your message, and you said "healthy" food. Whew! Now I don't have to tell you what I've been doing with that passion fruit syrup.
  • I think the best way to describe it is sort of like a cross between an orange and a grapefruit, but better than grapefruit (don't love graprefruit). They smell amazing too. And it's red inside, hence the blood part.
  • It's funny that you mentioned the blood orange. I usually take an orange or a tangelo to work for a snack. About a week ago I cut open my orange and it was RED! I had never heard of blood orange and I just assumed that something was wrong with it (I actually thought it was a muntant grapefruit!) and so I threw it away. But I bet it was one of those blood oranges you spoke of! I'll have to look out for another one.

I'm kinda stuck on my veggies, but I have been making myself eat one new (to me) vegetable every week. So far my favorite has been Jicama (sp?). I'm sure there are ways to cook it, but I just cut it up and added it to my salad. Now the problem I have is that I can't find any more! It's nice and sweet - very crispy.
  • My newest find is a DRINK. My oldest son gave me his pint of Guinness Stout to try when we were at this Irish restaurant a couple days ago. I always have encouraged my sons to try new things, so I couldn't NOT try the Guinness even though I have tried beer at least five times in my life and have ended up spitting out the sip each and every time. I took a VERRRY small sip, expecting to nonchalantly empty my mouth of Guinness into my readied napkin. As I swished the Guinness around in my mouth to get the taste, I discovered that it tasted kinda like concord grape WINE (a real fav of mine!) I took another sip- this one a bit larger. Mmmmm! good! I took my third and last sip, swirled the Guinness around in my mouth and totally enjoyed my newest taste adventure!

  • Tea. I've been a coffe drinker for years and just switched to tea a week ago and I can't get enough of the 0 calorie drink. LOL I've been drinking both herbal and black tea several times a day. They both have zero caffine.

Veggie wise I love them all pretty much. Brussel sprouts, asparagus, summer squash, cabbage, spinach are my favorites. I use cider vinegar on the brussel sprouts, cabbage and spinach.

Does it involve candlelight and Barry White playing quietly in the background?
  • Well, actually the "new food" that I'm surprised I like is brussel sprouts. Didn't you say you disliked it?

Another one is celery root. I had never tried this before last year but it's great, pureed, like mashed potatos kinda.
  • Salmon. I've never been a big fish eater....but broiled salmon with a sugarfree terriyaki glaze is delicious.
  • I tried mashed cauliflower for the first time last night and really liked it.
