Dressing sexy plus-sized is easy. Flattering dresses for plus size women are prettier than ever; you just need to know where to start. Nothing boosts your ego more than finding that just-right dress and stepping out knowing you look amazing.
The first step to finding a flattering dress is to consider your shape:
- Rounded – you carry most of your weight through the middle.
- Pear – you carry most of your weight through the hips and thighs.
- Hourglass – your shoulders are approximately the same size as your hips.
1. Single Color Dresses
Dresses that are one color and have soft, flowing material are flattering for the rounded figure. Consider a softly draped dress the color of merlot or chocolate. Look for dresses where the material is gathered or pleated in a diagonal criss-cross shape across the middle. This gives the waist a slimmer appearance.
Off the shoulder, or dresses with one sleeve, draw the eye away from the mid-section. Add a dramatic necklace for added interest.
A sheath dress that narrows toward the hem – also called a wedge dress – with raglan sleeves is both flattering and classy. A sheath is form fitting, but without a structured waistline. Raglan sleeves have extra material that drapes prettily from under the arm to the waist.
Choose black and add dangly chandelier earrings. The drop waist dress is very flattering. Look for one that has a decorative belt that ties at the hipline. Wear to-die-for strappy sandals to complete the look.
2. V-Neck Dresses
V-neck dresses emphasize your face and collarbone and draw the eye upward. This style is flattering on a pear-shape figure. Look for v-neck dresses that are softly ruffled or ruched at the neckline to add feminine softness. Flowing sleeves—long or short—add balance to your figure and look soft and pretty. An alternative to the v-neck is the cowel-neck or any type of draping neckline.
3. High Waist—or Empire Waist—Dresses
High waist dresses – also called empire – give your waist a longer line and draw the eye upward. This style is flattering on the pear-shape or rounded figure. Soft prints look pretty when the weather gets warm, or choose a solid color in jewel tones, such as red or purple.
Choose a dress that has a decorative top—embroidered, beaded or pleated—or add piles of beads or chains at the neck. Add a cropped jacket or sweater for a classy, sassy look.
4. Halter Dresses
Halter-top dresses flatter an hourglass or rounded figure by showing off the shoulders. A halter dress with a swingy skirt is sexy and feminine. Look for soft prints or Easter-egg pastels. Long skirts are what’s hot right now. Wear a long hippie-print halter dress to the beach, or go black and dressy for a night out on the town.
5. Belted or Bias-Cut Dresses
Dresses that are belted, nipped in at the waist or cut on the bias are a great choice for the hourglass figure. Look for dresses with romantic, flowing sleeves and plunging necklines. The sleeves are ever so feminine and the plunging neckline shows off your décolleté.
Dresses that balance the top and bottom are flattering on you, so look for dresses that have cap sleeves, a square or v-neckline and a bit of flare at the hem.
