Steeping tea for a long time is not a good idea if you want to benefit from its antioxidant properties. The benefits that come from consuming tea that is rich in antioxidants are many. They range from lowering the harmful cholesterol level in your body and fighting the effects of aging to preventing Alzheimer’s disease.

Steep Tea for 5 to 10 Minutes

You can steep your tea for 5 to 10 minutes in order to maximize the benefits of antioxidants. There are two types of tea that are the most common: green tea and black tea, and they have more antioxidants than bottled tea from the store. These types of teas also taste fantastic.

Losing Antioxidants

In order to enjoy the benefits of antioxidants you should not steep your tea for a long period of time. As soon as the tea touches the hot water the antioxidants will start blending with oxygen, and the tea will start losing the antioxidants. It takes a few hours for all the antioxidants to bond with the oxygen particles.

Drink your tea before it starts to lose all of its antioxidants. It is best to drink tea when it is hot, that way it still has a good amount of antioxidants. You will notice when your tea has no antioxidants, because when you sip your tea it will have a feeling of astringency or a metallic taste to it. For this reason tea should not be kept steeping for longer periods of time since it might lose all of its antioxidants.
