Wow what an incredible failure..(and what i learned)

Posted by: travelgal In: General

So as you all know, (especially tiny2b because i freaking commented to her 50 time) I was planning on going on a jog this morning, and I was debating between 3-4 miles.  Well I got up, I ate my 1/2 banana, i put on my clothes, got my ipod together etc and was all ready.  Last night I had decided that I would do a 4 mile run cuz worst comes to worst, if I can jog all of it, I’d walk etc etc. so i was all ready, went outside and was all pumped, walked my first 5 min like tiny2b had suggested, and then when it came time to jog, i could jog literally no more than 30 seconds before i had to stop.  i tried again a few minutes later, and again failed at jogging. it was awful. i walked the rest of my way, and cut it short and basically walked about 3 miles. which im fine about. but now i wish i had just got up early and gone to the gym, so i could have felt more successful and energized this morning, and less like a total joke.

things i learned:

1) i dont/cant jog outside (at least i’ve got that desire out of my system)

2) i dont plan on doing an outdoor 5k anytime soon/ever. im sticking to my indoor running, where i can actually feel and be successful at being semi athletic.

ugh this morning was a bummer. at least i got in some walking, since i dont have time for the gym today. i just wish i had gone to the gym from the beginning and not tried to do this ridiculous outdoor thing.

blah.

Well I read in a magazine.. Prevention magazine that people who walked for 1 minute to every 30 seconds of jogging would lose 5 times as much weight as those who simply walked. Not because of the initial work out but because of the metabolism adjustment. Im not sure though, with prevention im never sure whats a paid advertisment and whats not because of course in this artical the persons in Nike clothes and they suggested all of these items to use to stretch before you go.. I might be paranoid but im wary of magazines that accept paid advertisments and they do.

Anyhow I used to have gym membership.. I still do its just in a different state now that I moved out of parents, and I do think if you bring a good music playlist on an ipod or whatever makes you happy that its far more cathargic and rewarding than the gym. I know where I run there are hills and challenges that the gym would have just made boring. I know when i get to the top of the hill here I feel like I accomplished something and its not like being stuck on a treadmill….. but who am I to say anything! I have been walking for weeks now and am gaining weight even while on the atkins diet!!
SO whatever works for you is good…
but “this ridiculous outdoor thing”
Might just be what you need after a long day of being stuck in buildings :)

Stop beating yourself up. You had a bad running day. That’s okay. It happens. REALITY: If you want to run in a 5k with other people, you need to be able to run outside. Sorry! I know it sucks, but you can do it.

My advice: keep doing your treadmill runs, and really push and follow the program etc. on the treadmill. But at least every other day, try to run outside. Set a one mile goal and run as much of it as you can and walk the rest, or do intervals for that mile or whatever. Don’t use it as your “run” for the day. It’s just for practice. That way, you can still do your gym workout and feel good and feel successful, yet get your outdoor running in too.

COME ON, YOU CAN DO IT. I KNOW THIS FOR A FACT, because I did it, and I am totally out of shape and lame and if I can do it anyone can do it, and I mean that LITERALLY not just as a feel-good rah rah thing!

Oh, and another thing you can do outside, which is what my boot camp instructor has people doing who are not runners, walk 20 steps, jog 20 steps, walk 20 steps, jog 20 steps. Seriously. If you do that for a mile, you’ll be running a half mile! DO IT! DO IT! DO IT!

And one more… because I hit enter prematurely (sorry!) The rest of the DO IT! post is: if she has the peope who are NOT runners doing that, then it will be easy-peasy for you because you ARE a runner. : )
