Changing My Calorie Limits!??
General January 15th, 2008OK, So after doing a bit of research online, i’ve realized that my 1000-1200 calorie range for a day is just too low, and could directly promote fat retention. So I’ve decided to move it up to 1200-1500 range with 1300-1400 being the idea range for one day, but 1500 being acceptable. The calculator thing says that my extreme weight loss limit would be 1816 Calories/day, but that seems really high to me and says my maintenance calorie limit would be 2918 Calories/day which also seems really high to me. I think im gonna start with this 1200-1500 range tomorrow because I also think it will be less stressful for me as well. What are your gals’ experience with counting calories and how low is healthy, but will really promote weight loss. (if it matters i exercise 6 days a week for at least an hour)
Any responses greatly welcome! thanks!

Hey there. When I’m in losing mode, I shoot for 10 x body weight in cals, try it for a couple of weeks, and adjust up or down depending on how it’s going, how I feel energy-wise, etc.
IMO, the “starvation response” thing is way overblown — yeah, there is such a thing, but it only kicks in after a long time (measured in months, not days) at sub-1000 calories. Even then, it just means that you stop losing as high a percentage of your body weight each week. For 99.9% of us, getting too many calories is far more of a hindrance to weight loss than getting too few. YMMV, etc. KAW16.

As far as counting calories go, I am personally terrible at it!!! I think 1500 calories is a good MINIMUM especially because you are exercising regulrly. I’ve tried the 1200 calorie limit before and it seemed like I couldn’t eat like anything! I’m more of a firm believeer in eating low fat and and low glycemic index foods, but good luck and I hope it works out for you!

I say 1400-1600 seems about right, though everyone is different and perhaps you just don’t have a huge appetite. Personally I can’t count calories, it drives me crazy and makes me obsessed, too things you should never be while trying to lose weight. I just started eating healthy and then every once in awhile (once a month or when I have an off day) I’ll count that days calories and it always ends up around 1500. I never try to hit that mark, but it just seems like my body is most comfortable with that amount. Anyways don’t be afraid to experiment one or two bad weeks that help you figure out what works for you won’t affect you in the long run! Good Luck!!
