Knee is better

I’m thinking it was the crappy sandals I dug out to wear.

I waited too long to get sandals @ WalMart for the summer (because it’s still not really warm here yet!) and now they had nothing left in the ladies’ section. So instead I got 2 pairs of men’s sandals, aka mandals.

They are both brown leather, comfy, it was $42 for the whole shebang. I think these will last a few years. I’m not the kind of person who balks at wearing men’s clothing or shoes, so it’s not a deal.

I only wanted to spend $3 on those fake Adidas sandals they have every year, but they didn’t have any of those either. This may be worth a trip to the other (nicer, bigger) WalMart to see what they have. My old ones needed replacing.

Also I have a shard of glass stuck in my foot. Tiny, but stuck. I had one of those Party Lite candles on top of the fridge & it dive bombed one day & shattered. I picked up the big pieces, but didn’t have time to vacuum yet. My own fault! I think I got it out, but if I step on the foot in a certain way, it hurts again. Sigh.

Swimming going well, can’t wait to do it again this week!

I’ve lost 15 pounds swimming!

But I think I effed up my knee. Feels like meniscus or tendonitis. I have to make an appt to see what it could be & get it fixed. In & out of cars as well as up & down stairs is quite painful as are lateral moves with the knee. Maybe I’m kicking wrong?

The good part is I finally finally FINALLY realized this weight will not budge w/o exercise. Consider it my aha! moment.

Hope everyone’s having a great weekend, MS Walk was today, had a great turnout!!! :)

I’ve lost 10 pounds in a month!

I have been swimming 1-4 nights a week, and watching my food pretty closely.

My swim buddy & I are planning on stepping it up by going 4-5 nights a week. I have found 2-3 swimsuits I can wear, so I won’t have to worry about them wearing out too soon.

I’m back on the study medication for my kidneys. No more grapefruit for a year, at least. They were awesome while they lasted. :)

Hope everyone else is doing great! xoxox

I lost 6 pounds!

And feel like I am on my way. My friend A is swimming with me 3x a week, then my friend K said she would work out with me at least 2x per week. I want to lift, she is thinking machines, or maybe the other way around. Any way you slice it, I think it’s finally dawned on me that no matter what I do foodwise, if I stick to a Mediterranean version of the DASH plan, watch my portion sizes & sodium, none of it will matter w/o exercise.

The swimming feels good. I found an AMAZING swimcap @ Amazon.com. Speedo for Long Hair. AMAZING. Keeps my hair dry & that’s really why you even wear a cap to begin with, correct? Goggles are foggy but good, and the swimsuits well, what are ya gonna do? I have one that’s becoming quite faded but I have 3 more for backups (various sizes of course) so that works out nice. And yes, I have tried putting contact solution in the goggles before I put them on. Some days it works, other days, not so much. It worked better when they were too tight for my face, may have to try adjusting the straps again.

In other news, my friend T is an RN & has had some experience with weight loss counseling, so she is helping me with my portions, although I think her sheet she gave me is wrong. 3 servings a day each of bread/grain, meat, fruit, veg. She doesn’t have dairy on there & that doesn’t sound like enough calories. The dietician @ Mayo Clinic said I can have 1800 calories. It doesn’t sound like I would be getting that with only 3 servings each per day? Confusing. I’m waiting for an email back explaining that.

Hope everyone else is having a great week! I have the day off & I’m gonna clean. :) xoxox

Swimming again!

I have finally found a workout buddy. She is coming swimming with me at my gym. We swim for 45, then take a sauna for 10. Will have to check with my dr about the sauna due to the blood pressure.

Hope everyone else is having a great week!

grapefruit is awesome.

I’ve had one every day for lunch this week, with my meal. YUM.

The clinical trial will continue in the next few months. For another year. We are waiting on the FDA as usual.

I was able to get the money they gave to everyone else. It was not considered a conflict of interest by my employer, which was so nice.

Work has been crazy, I’ve been training people left & right. My boss hired 3 people to start this month, one per week. Never again. We’ve had 4 positions open since last summer. I don’t want to hear how bad the job market is when we’ve been scheduling interviews and only half the candidates show up for a first interview. You only get a call for a first interview if you fit into certain holes–don’t ask for too much money, have experience, don’t call my boss or supervisor directly asking why you didn’t get the interview or job (it breaks protocol. everything goes through monster.com & while my boss has the final say, corporate does all the interview scheduling & weeding out & “thanks but no thanks” letters. Calling her directly only convinces her you won’t follow protocol once you’re here, either.) Now we hired 3 new peeps, they seem to be doing ok, only time will tell.

Also when I tell people we are desperate for people where I work, that doesn’t mean we are going to hire someone with 30 years experience managing offices for the work we do in my department. She asked for $3 more than I make now & I’ve been with the company 3 years. There’s no way they’d offer a new person any more than $5 less than what she asked for, there are no negotiations on that, it’s company policy. So to tell me, “Well you must not need people that bad if you turned so & so down” isn’t helping. There’s not really a nice way to tell someone they are WAY overqualified & are asking for too much money. :(

Dieting has been good, as usual. Provigil made me completely lose my appetite, which has been a good thing in some ways. I am fine, as long as I stay on schedule. The 3FC’ers have taught me so much over the years, but one of those was: food is fuel. I’ve been using food as a substitute for other things. I can’t do that on these pills. But I also have to remember to eat something every few hours or it all goes haywire & I get RAVENOUS.

Exercise, well I think we all know how that is going. I hate winter. This winter has been no different. I like to walk & swim, who wants to do that in the farking winter? To leave the gym with wet hair is unappealing, as is walking indoors around the track like a hamster. But these are things I must get over by the end of the month. Just getting the shoes, socks & sweatpants in the car would be a huge start.

Hope everyone else is doing well. xoxox

Not dead, I promise!

Will elaborate later, no computer @ hm for last 3 weeks. Something about the ceiling caving in, etc.

Down to 335. Yay!

Clinical trial not going on right now. Pretty freaking sweet to have an actual grapefruit. :D

Hope everyone else is doing well. xoxox

Questions about the clinical trial answered

I was born with polycystic kidney disease. My grandmother has a kidney transplant when I was 7 months old. My father’s transplant was last Halloween. In our family, you need a new kidney when you’re 50, when you have this disease.

So. After being diagnosed, I went through your usual why me? and self-pity and defiance. I still have some of that. Kinda like with weight loss, I know what to do, I just don’t always do it. I have to eat low sodium, low animal protein, and little to no caffeine (which has been almost unbearable). I can’t have anything for pain that is not Tylenol. I have to be careful with lifting & contact sports. And yes, someday I will need a new kidney.

That’s where Tolvaptan comes in. You can click the link to read more, but it’s basically supposed to shrink my kidney cysts & prevent new ones from growing in.

At the beginning of the trial, the doctor said to me, “I see many people with this disease, and some of them, I can say, ‘You won’t ever have a problem with your kidneys, you will never need transplant.” Then he looked right at me & said, “I cannot say the same to you.”

More recently, a different doctor pulled up my results from my MRI last December. She said, “These white spots on the screen, those are your cysts.” Then she said, “I’m blinded.”

These things are a bit hard to take. I usually wait til I get to the airport to cry. The last 3 years have been amazing, inspiring, and very very hard. I weighed 277 when I began the study. My kidney dr here in town threatened that if I didn’t lose 25 pounds that he was going to recommend me for gastric. I went back to him weighing 28 pounds less & he was very very happy. I haven’t seen him since. 4 visits to the kidney doctor a year was enough.

So this trial is coming to an end. I was so happy. I was going to concentrate on my weight loss, really kick it into high gear. I know what everyone’s thinking, why can’t you start today? Make it a good day today? Well, my eating is not that horrible, it’s the thing that got me to this weight in the first place–lack of exercise. I hate it. I don’t enjoy it. I feel stupid, always have. Always sucked at sports, and the gym teachers were always always ALWAYS more interested in the more athletic kids. I really do think they should have focused on those of us who were less comfortable with physical activity. Jerks. :)

But I digress. I used to eat a grapefruit every day for a snack. Gave them up in 2004 due to the meds. I was looking forward to having my favorite snack back. I was looking forward to being able to get on with my life, and not be tied down to the schedule of the meds.

The side effects are excessive thirst & frequent urination. At first it was bad, but now it’s more bearable. And if it keeps me off dialysis, I’m all for it!

So I spoke to my nurse, she said they are doing it, we would talk about it at my visit but that the drug company would continue to pay for my travel. I would go off the meds on 12/19/08 & go back on it in 2009 when the trial started back up. I have decided I am going to do it. I will be doing both the weight loss & the Tolvaptan. Not a huge deal. I just have to work on getting my butt MOVING.

So that’s where I am at. Hope everyone else is had a great weekend! xoxox
