Eating in makes it much easier
General April 13th, 2009I went away for the weekend to Zurich Switzerland to visit a friend who moved there in January. The first thing I told her upon arriving was that I had started a new diet, and that was great because we went to a grocery store and stocked up on stuff I could eat, and she made special efforts to find restaurants that were suitable when we did eat out.
We went to a restaurant for lunch on Saturday that had half a roasted chicken and veggie salad bar (I chose all low carb ones) and it was perfect. We made steak and veggies for dinner, had some olives for snacks, chicken and veggies another dinner, strawberries (yup, still) for desserts and eggs for breakfast. No sweat, no worries.
We also walked around a ton, which was good for my spirits, good for my mind, good for my body. Went to a silly girls movie (Marley & Me : Jennifer Aniston, Owen Wilson & Puppies!) We both cried twice - once for the miscarriage (which we’ve both been through) and once at the sad ending. Very therapeutic.
Anyway, it was a nice gab-fest relaxing weekend, plenty of sleep, no stress. Eating this way is remaining do-able. Boring, but do-able, and the boring is fine. I am finding that traveling w almonds is really a key success strategy, because it’s often hard to find low-carb snacks while out and about, and even if they’re not perfect, they’re easy to have with you.

How wonderful that your friend was so accommodating to your needs. I bet you were really able to enjoy the weekend when you learned you wouldn’t have to worry about the food.
The movie sounds good, I’ll have to add it to my list.

My dad went to Zurich once for work. he said it was so nice there and the lanscape beautiful. It sounds like you had a wonderful time with a very good friend who is understanding about your diet. Good to see you doing so well.
Take care

We just watched Marley and me last night. I had tears rolling down and had to get a tissues for my runny nose. Almonds work great. My kids get used to me carrying nuts in my pocket and are always asking for some. It kind of feels like dog treats! I’m rewarding my “pets” with healthy nuts instead of candy and keeping my mouth and stomach happy. Glad you had a great time with your friend. Those moments are priceless.

I learned this strategy from my son: when he was much younger he was a very picky eater, and if we were out for dinner and he was presented with something he didn’t want to eat he would look up and say, “Oh I can’t, I’m allergic.” Instant sympathy and accommodation. (And much snorting from Mom) Now, without lying like that, I say, “Oh, I just can’t eat that” with appropriate tones of regret and a general air of forebearance and I find I rarely have to offer more explanation.

Almonds are a great idea. Easy to carry, lightweight and don’t get squashed. What a fabulous time you had, too.
