Too many objectives
Plan January 6th, 2009I’m realizing I’m focusing on too many objectives right now, so I’m temporarily cutting out one that I think is really important, “Leave Something Left Over at Each Meal”.
It will be important for me to continue to work on this, and it was really helpful to have it front-and-center over the holidays, but with changing jobs, traveling, and trying to get an exercise habit built in, it’s a bit more than I can manage right now.
I’m keeping the goal of tracking fruit & veggies and trying to hit 9 servings every day (ideal) because I find it’s really helpful to get me to choose fruit or more veggies when I’m hungry.
The LeftOver goal will be back soon, and is not completely out of my head, I’m just one of those people who believes in fewer goals followed well vs tons of goals followed loosely (or the surefire recipe for a nervous breakdown - tons of goals followed closely — been there, done that, not going back.)

I have a real hard time leaving something on my plate. thats why counting calories works so well for me. I eat what i put on my plate. I just dont think i could retrain myself to leave food behind. Its a good thing to work on tho. I think you are right about not wanting to have too many goals to work on at one time. you dont want to get overwhelmed, and then not accomplish any of your goals. good luck

Simplify, simplify, simplify, right? I think you are smart to know when overextending yourself will be counterproductive to your goals. I felt this same way when I dropped weightlifting because I was getting only negative feelings from not meeting the goals.

Making things easier has always been a good idea. I have never had a problem leaving things on my plate so I am lucky. I grew up with a very strict grandmother that always used to scold me, “a lady NEVER eats everything on her plate” Wish she would have scolded me about second helpings

Wow, what a great lesson to learn in childhood, that a lady doesn’t eat it all!
I never learned that and I almost always eat what is on my plate - stopping short is a heroic effort for me, which is why I want to train myself to ALWAYS stop, just sometimes with one itsy bitsy bite left, sometimes with a fair amount, based on how much I enjoy the food and how hungry I am.
I have a LONG way to go, but the first step will be stopping the autopilot.
Still, it will have to wait…

I was always told “there are starving children in Africa” and that I should always clean my plate. I’m trying to break that habit too…it’s hard. But I’m also finding at least at home, I can control how much is on that plate and if it’s the reasonable amount I’ve allotted my points for, then it’s okay. It’s a long path to retrain 30 years of bad habits tho, good luck on everything you have going on right now. You will get there!

I`ve never been one to leave anything leftover on my plate either,, I need to really work on that. In our childhood home, you ate what was on your plate and then some:( Which is why we all have a wieght problem!!!
I feel the same way with excercise, i always want to do more then i can and then i am not putting my 100% into it.
Good that we know our limitations:)
Keep up the great work!!

The reason why I set the after-dinner rule, is because I was really successful with that back in 2000 (when that pic was taken). Last night was a STRUGGLE, to say the least. I ended up eating some nuts and some sprees, but nothing like what I used to eat. I went to bed hungry; that was a first!
Great idea on the Leftover Goal. I have been very successful doing that. I lost about 10 pounds once just leaving half of my meal un-eaten. Let me know how it goes! 2009 WILL be OUR year!

Wow, you got a lot of feedback on this one! I recall once being told that no company should introduce more than three changes at an given time. Noting that we are not a company, but merely a person, and therefore cannot delegate to anyone, I think reducing your goals is a good idea.
Cheers!
