Do you enjoy food?
Eat June 5th, 2008In my experience there are three ways to eat :
- For sustenance only
- With great enjoyment
- On autopilot
Obviously, being overweight is a signal that I am not someone who eats only for sustenance. A few times in my life I have eaten like this however (when sick mainly, but for a few weeks when maniacally dieting) - where eating becomes a task like brushing your teeth - something you have to do that you don’t particularly enjoy. Like I said, this isn’t really my problem (nor is it likely to be yours if you’re reading weight-loss blogs…)
The second category of enjoying my food can claim some wonderful memories and great pleasures, but is probably responsible for very little of my excess weight — because when you are really enjoying something you experience it fully and that pleasure experience is usually not coupled with the need to “fill up” and so you can have smaller portions and be quite satisfied (as almost all gourmet restaurant experiences can attest). Unfortunately, I am much more often eating on autopilot and not really experiencing my food. I know at the end of last year when I was working with Dr Hope I had a lot of homework on this topic and it was really hard but really eye-opening. Incorporating this appreciation of what I eat on a daily basis is one of my long-term goals.
The final category, “eating on autopilot” is without a doubt responsible for 99% of my excess weight. Why do we spend so much time eating on autopilot - munching, slurping, sipping, etc without really paying attention to the tastes, textures and pleasure in our food? Fast food in the car, eating anything in front of the TV or computer, any time we eat and multitask — all signs we aren’t paying attention to what we’re eating. I’ve been known to plow through impressive quantities of food because I’m enjoying the rhythm of eating.
I recently saw a doctor comment on obesity who said “I really don’t think that obese people allow themselves to experience hunger… obese people really don’t get into the taste, texture, and sensations when eating food. Furthermore, they don’t even like the foods that they overeat, and they don’t pay attention to and are not conscious of what they are eating most of the time.”
The comment hit pretty close to home for me…

Auto pilot, hmmm, makes me think. I believe that is what a lot of us do, as well as eat to cover our emotions or our pain.

But the doctor is so right, often I eat without being hungry or even enjoying what I am eating.
And eating in front of the TV is bad, it will actually make you start to crave food as soon as you sit in front of it. Triggers a pavlion reaction, oh well at least I don’t drool…..yet

Good point! When I was fasting last Monday, I was so sick of water and gatorade I decided to heat up a cup of chicken broth around dinner time. It was delicious! I think it was because I was really hungry and there weren’t a lot of competing flavors. It was plain, fat-free, clear chicken broth. I never would have thought it could be so good!

Hmm I am going to marry a person that falls into the first category - If I didn’t love him so much I would loath him. I read about an experiment with someone trying to lose weight and they thing they “made” her do was experience true hunger and she said once she did it and realized she wasn’t going to die from hunger she was able to push through it.
Heck I just get miserable when I am hungry - -its not pretty LOL

Hmmmm. Yup. I think that’s absolutely right. The auto-pilot thing. I don’t do it so much anymore, and I have taught myself to appreciate what I’m eating, but I still have a tendency to want large portions, and even when you’re eating healthy foods as opposed to junk, you still need to be aware of how much you’re eating. That’s hard for me.

ITA. I’m autopiloted myself into becoming a 747!
I am working on being more aware of what I eat, when I eat and how much I eat. Today, we went out to eat during a training class. I had a salad, which I finished, but only ate 1/2 of my entree. It’s progress b/c I stopped when I was full. Plus, my DD is pretty happy with the leftovers she gets for lunch tomorrow!

I have just started reading “Intuitive Eating”. It talks a great deal about unconscious eating. If you haven’t read it, it may be something that you are interested in.

Yes, I enjoy food…now. I realized that once I kept a food journal of what was going in my mouth it really did allow me to see how much junk I was actually eating. Now because I’m restricting mostly ALL of my favorite foods, whenever I do taste them (like the macoroni and tuna salad today) I am actually savoring each bite because I know it’s a treat. It was delicious!

I think you make good points. I’ve been trying to not do the autopilot thing, to pay attention, and I think it’s helping - and - interestingly enough - not just with weight and food. It’s an approach to life.
As always, I enjoy and learn so much from you!
