Wanting water, veggies & fruit
Eat January 13th, 2008Being away from home for a week gives one an appreciation of the simple foods of daily life. I am craving fresh veggies - as simple as possible, fresh fruit & lots of water.
I went to the market today and stocked up. Yesterday I didn’t have the courage to face shopping so we made due with what was in the house, which was basically carbs and meat - my husband is rather predictable!
But today, crisp apples, juicy pears and succulent clementines joined the lineup, as did brussel sprouts, leeks and carrots. I also bought the closest thing I could find to pinto beans at the market and some split peas, and I have a split pea soup simmering on the stove as I write this. I found a recipe online that used bacon instead of a ham hock, because I don’t have any idea how to say ham hock in French, and the idea of a big bone thing in my soup is not appealing - the bacon comes pre-chopped in little packages here, so no touching is involved… I’m a real wimp when it comes to handling meat.
I’m hoping to get it together to go for a walk later today… no promises however, I’m pretty tired and my husband booked a massage for us in the late afternoon.
This week it’s back to a normal routine. The goal is to walk at least 3 times this week, and keep up with the paying attention while I eat, leaving something uneaten at each meal, and keeping the food diary. We are going away for the weekend on Friday morning, and I expect the weekend to be a pretty indulgent affair, food-wise. I’m going to try to really heavy-up the veggies all week in anticipation.

I want to crave fresh ’simple’ veggies ! I think I need to prepare some for lunch and dinner, to kind of get back into the habit. Winter has been a time of eating so much potatoes & yams, grains, heavy foods. Light fresh zuchini ratatouille sounds like something I want to make.
I’m glad you are cooking your soups and finding little shortcuts to personalize your food. I too have a difficult time handling meat. I’d be a vegetarian if it weren’t for having a carnivor husband
Glad you’re back Sarah ~XO

Hiya, I overeat and I binge, in reply to your comment. I am tackling losing weight and trying not to binge at the same time.

It really is much easier to stick with a healthful diet by eating at home. I usually do well at home, surrounded by the right foods. It’s when I go to restaurants that I pig out badly.
And I liked your response to my comments about theTomorrow Diet.
The Tomorrow Exercise Plan, indeed! I’ll have to start that also.
Tomorrow, of course.
Thanks!

That large bone in the soup thing reminded me of this scary story I read in elementary school. An old woman goes to the graveyard looking for a nice soup bone. She finds a rather large one, and brings it back with her. Anyways, she gets haunted by this dead thing that wants its bone back. The story is scary, but it actually gets sort of funny by the end when she keeps tasting the soup and she keeps getting bothered by the thing outside her door (we never see it) that moans and rattles. Finally she gets fed up enough that she whips the bone out of her soup while screaming, “FINE, TAKE IT!”, and tosses it out the window. There is a scurrying, a sniffing, and then the thing leaves. It’s just a gross/scary/funny story I remember. =) Might have been French in origin.
I miss fresh fruits too once you are taken from them. They are soooo much better than vegetables.

I just got back from a business trip to Seattle and I’m in total produce envy! Their fruits and veggies look like they popped out of a magazine they’re so perfect!
If I lived there I’d eat nothing but fruits veggies and seafood - however I could never move there because the weather depresses me, lol.

You’re not alone in craving fruits and veg. I cannot wait until summer when I can once again go to the farmer’s market and load up on fresh goodies. For the meantime, I’m eating frozen fruit, bananas, apples, oranges, and pears for fruit. Most veggies are okay at the grocery store, so I won’t get into that.
As for my weekly calorie load, I just figure what my daily calories are and multiply by seven. It keeps me from the mindset that if I go over one day, then I blew my calorie goal, so I might as well eat a whole pie. I’m adding you to my blogroll
Oh, check out http://www.eatingwell.com for some great recipes centered around fresh fruits and veggies. Everyone needs a little spark in the repertoire, in my opinion.

Thanks for the words of encouragement
Are leeks the same thing as green onions? I googled leeks and it LOOKED like a green onion, but I wasn’t sure. Thats good that you are leaving food uneaten sometimes, I can’t do that at all ever. It looks like you are doing really great.

Welcome back. I’m not so much craving fruit and veggies as I am getting sick and/or tired when I eat the wrong things! Maybe the other will kick in soon. Don’t you just love massages? Sweet of your DH to think of that for the two of you. Have a great day.

Hm… Ham hock –> “jambon à l’os”, perhaps? (I’m not 100% sure, it’s something I never cook.)
