Today’s Totals - Aug 4th, 2008
Another lovely day. I still didn’t get as much done in the garden as I would have liked, but I’m never sure that you ever do. With the buckets of rain that we’ve had lately and the warm weather the pots are just taking a beating. And yet, some of them are gorgeous. The little garden patch down the side of the garage is doing, um… well.
I really should go back and take a picture when the sun shows it better, however, if you look in the back of the first picture you’ll see the black pot with the vine growing at the base. In the second picture I had to move the pot as the zucchini was taking over.
Food for the day:
Total: 2165 (31% fat, 33% carbs, 35% protein)
Breakfast: two fried eggs, pecan raisin bread, jam, clementines (357)
AM Snack: fruit and nut squares (169)
Lunch: whole wheat tortillas, mustard, smoked turkey, cheese, peach, plums (483)
PM Snack: hummus, carrots, protein shake (254)
Dinner: crockpot chicken with salsa, corn, broccoli and cheese, calico coleslaw (624)
Late Snack: protein shake with frozen peaches (278)
The last of the cherries….
I was going to wait a few more days, however, we have a storm warning for tonight. It was for high winds, heavy rain, and possibly hail. I’m betting that we won’t get it now though. I decided better safe than sorry so I took the last of the cherries off the tree. These are the other cherries, the Heidelfingen.
They need about a week…
This morning I chased away not one, but two squirrels. They were doing their best to break the cherry laden branches off the one tree. There are actually two trees growing side by side. So I stripped off the remaining cherries from the one tree and cut a huge piece of netting and tied up the other cherries. It likely won’t keep them off completely, but will hopefully slow them down a bit. So these are about a week or so from being fully ripe, but they are still lovely and sweet.
This is about a quarter of what was on the tree. From weighing out last night’s fruit I’d say this is probably about 3 or 4lbs worth of fruit. Some we’ve eaten, some we’ve given away. More than half fell to birds and squirrels. Next year I will be more prepared. The trees need a lot of trimming back though so next year’s yield may be low. The good new is that the boysenberries and the raspberries are starting to show colour!
Hail !?!
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen hail before. Just never this much, this fast. On the plus side, the pots on the patio are starting to look pretty good.
I can smile because it won’t do much to the annuals, and the sun is already shining again. The cherries might be toast though. We’ll have to wait and see.
Added - the cherries look like they’ll be okay… as long as we can protect them from the birds!
Not finished…
However, this is the last time the pots will all be together in the one place. Some of the pots are already in place, as well as the hanging baskets. There are still a few things to come out of the crawlspace and everything has to be moved around. It might be days before I get it just the way I want it (or I may simply stop at the end of the day).
Spring Flowers
Ask and you shall receive. I took a couple of photos this morning. fatbaby - the garden isn’t well tended yet. There’s still a lot of spring clean-up to do, but that’s okay. I’ll take pictures of the berry bushes later (perhaps with berries on them). Right now they’re mainly just sticks with a little green on them. You can click on any of the pictures to see a bigger version if you wish.
The side border in the front with mainly daffodils, but a few tulips coming:
