Today’s Totals - May 11th, 2009
So this morning I ended up walking on my own. My mother wasn’t up to it (claimed stomach problems) and the neighbour isn’t around on Monday mornings. I suspect that my mother just did too much yesterday (grass was too thick, but needed to be cut), but who knows. She’s up and around at the moment so I guess that she’s fine.
The interesting thing was that on my own I came in about a minute faster than when I walk with the neighbour. The difference is that I walk slower, and threw in three sets of jogging. So I ended up with:
41 mins, 395 cals, Max HR: 181 (102%), Avg HR: 150 (85%)
I suppose I should pay more attention to the maximum heart rate, but I’ve started working on increasing the length of the jogging periods. With my mother, the cooldown period is at a slower pace as I turn around and walk back to where she is, then turn and walk with her (which is slower than my natural pace). I also went a longer distance today as I wasn’t doubling back. It wasn’t a bad morning for it, although a little cold. We had a touch of frost last night and there were still some obvious patches on the grass. Technically our frost free date is May 24th, but it’s usually considered safer to wait until June 1st.
Not really sure what I’m doing today, but back outside I go.

So I’m trying to figure out what I did today. It turned out to be a little of this a little of that again. I dug up the perennial hibiscus, as it needed to be split (no room where it was). The damn thing was one huge tuberous root. I know the piece I put back in was fine, and I kept a piece for my mother for the front garden. I also gave a couple of pieces to the neighbours but warned them I had to use a knife, an ax, and a saw to split it up (the fork got stuck). It’s a pretty plant though and I hope I’m right that I haven’t killed my own piece.
Then I emptied some pots, as we’ve decided to cut down on the number that we’ll plant this year. I’ll probably get harsh and do a few more tomorrow. At that point I suppose that I’ll get the other pots ready for planting, clean off the rest of the patio and put out the chairs around the table. It’s easy to leave that last as we have two wooden chairs down by the pool. At that point I suppose it will feel like summer.
