So I had decided to do 45 mins of cardio today. Somewhere in my head I’m thinking 45 today, Thurs and Friday will work. I’ve been having problems with my shoes the last month or so (maybe longer). I bought them in May, from a store I’ve dealt with before. Basically they’re too loose and I was getting blisters. I went in a while back and talked to one woman who showed me how to use the heel lock (which I never use) and that helped a bit. However, I was beginning to think that I had to come close to cutting off the circulation in my foot in order to get them tight enough. I started walking this morning and decided after I was done I was going to go at least try shoes on a half size smaller.
It was a fairly decent morning, 18 or so (mid 60s), so I went outside to walk. Since it was really nice out and my energy level was high I threw in a little light jogging. Sometimes doing HIIT I run, but this was more like a slow jog. I look down at the HR monitor and it’s showing 213!
I stopped, no pounding heart, and it drops to 137 (about what I would expect). Well, it freaked me out a little and I decided that I should maybe stop. I was close enough to 22.5 mins that I decided to break it into two sessions. I grabbed a shower, went looking for shoes, ended up buying them. Turns out that my right foot is about half a size smaller than the left. So the left shoe is a touch tight but the right one is good.
After lunch I decided to try out the new shoes. I started the walking and about a minute in I went up to a jog. This is normal for me. Even went I don’t jog off and on it’s not unusual for me to throw it in for a couple of laps. Again, the HR monitor jumps to 203. No pounding heart, no nothing. I slow it down and it’s back at 119. I stopped it for a minute, took my pulse manually, no problems. I’m really starting to think it’s the monitor so I started it again and did my 22.5 mins to make up to my 45 for the day. Afterwards I’m sitting down and the heart rate goes back to it’s normal high 60s, low 70s pretty fast. I know that if I sit longer it’s going to go back to it’s usual high 50s, low 60s. So now I’m really starting to wonder what’s going on. I’m actually considering a doctor’s visit over this. And for me, that’s amazing.
So as I’m sitting there I’m now registering 00. Okay, I know I still have a pulse so I check the strap. Hmmm… the bra is interfering with it. Moment of clarity - new, better fitting bra today. I bought three with the right band size (4″ smaller) and just got them last week. I’d worn the other two to school but this was the first time I’d worn the HR monitor with the new bra. So I pull the shirt up, readjust the strap/bra combination… problem gone. I got up and did about 5 minutes of intervals (Max: 154, Avg: 129) with no problems. So just ignore the freaky max HR in the first set of numbers.
Of course it also means that the average and calories burned are off (but likely only a bit).
