Rants and Raves

Okay, so based on some of the suggestions from the 3FC forums I went low fat food shopping.  I thought I would review some of the low fat foods I’ve tried.. sort of a foot critic for low fat food stuff.

Let me start off with the question: Why is low fat food so damn expensive?  I am getting less for more.  I think food costs should be based on the calories it gives.  This would eliminate so many problems.  The low fat good for you food would cost less, letting people with less money more bang for their buck.  Instead it is the opposite.  The high fat high calorie foods are cheap, giving people with less money more problems.

So the foods up for review today are:

Laughing Cow Light Cheese - 45 calories for two portions.

This is amazing. AMAZING!  I love cream cheese, I don’t eat it often, but at this calorie range I can eat one a day easily with a slice of BodyWise toast (45 calories) for a snack.  So so tasty.  Definitely one of the best finds for the night.  Now I know why so many of the ladies on the forums are addicted to this stuff.  The best part it doesn’t have that low fat taste to it.  You know what I’m talking about.. its that I wanna be delicious but I’m not quite cutting it taste.  Best part is my daughter Yumna loves it too!

Skinny Cow Chocolate Popsicle - 50 calories per popsicle

I was surprised by how many times I’ve seen Skinny Cow products mentioned on the forums.  If this popsicle is an indication of how their other products taste I would say stay clear!  This was expensive.. 14 popsicles for $6.69.  I did the math.. roughly 50 cents per popsicle which is not great but not horrible if this was good.. but for the taste, I would say keep your money, keep walking past the aisle.. buy yourself some kid size popsicles that actually taste good, eat half and throw the other half away or keep it for tomorrow - and pay HALF the money!

Jello Brand No Sugar Added Chocolate Pudding - 60 calories per cup

This was okay.  Just okay.  Still had that wanna be taste to it.. It can’t compare to a real snack pack, but I could eat this.  But why?  What I had been doing previous to this is when Yumna would ask for one, I would take a bite before giving it to her and it would be enough.. I think that was less calories than eating this.  I only ate half and put the rest back in the fridge of this pudding.. I didn’t think it was worth the calories… even if they were 60 of them.

Update:  I had the remaining half of this, and it was good.  Maybe I had some leftover taste of that Skinny Cow popsicle in my mouth when I had this.. but I retract my previous review.. I liked it and would eat it.

President’s Choice - Paper Sealed Seafood Trio - 200 calories

This was my best find.. this was seafood, vegetables and potatoes in a coconut curry, sealed in a paper bag.. you put it in the oven for an hour (or 7 mins in the microwave).. it was so tasty.. I ate some, my husband had some and the baby ate all the potatoes.. so so so good.  I don’t know if you get PC products in the States, but they are great.. its an amazing brand that you find in Loblaws, Superstore and No Frills grocery stores.  This is an easy low calorie meal for $4.99.

Anyways, I had a great time trying these things yesterday.  Both Yumna and I had a fun time trying out all these foods.. and yes she ate without a battle.. mind you there was chocolate to be had.
