First Day of Freedom

It feels very strange not ot be at work and to think I won’t be going back. So far I’ve:

…had a protein shake for breakfast…went for coffee with a friend…returned pop bottles

…cleaned the kitchen from top to bottom…made the bed…stacked wood next to the woodstove …played Spyder on the computer….Read my book…Walked to the library and store (about 2 miles). Oh had a protein shake for lunch too. Friends had a surprise dinner for me on Saturday (champagne too!) and I continued to eat too much. We never made it out to dinner and a movie on Friday. We broke out the wine and were watching a movie when a friend of ours called and asked if we wanted to go to a castle with her. By this time I was 3 sheets to the wind, and said what the heck (she drove) and sure enough we went to the home of some people who built their own castle. It had huge heavy doors, pillars, and a central room with a huge fireplace and a balcony around the top. It was a meeting of the SCA ..something like Society for Creative Anacronisms. Anyway, these people role- play as if they are in the 8th - 15th century…they each have a personna that they take on when they meet. It has to be a made-up character from this time period. They have a big meeting in PA in the summer called Pensig…where they camp out..thousands of them from all over the world. My friend wanted to go to this meeting to find out more about it. Well I continued to drink more wine and ate lots of yummy food in front of the fire, and was amazed at this whole group. They were an interesting bunch. One woman was making a belt using a contraption I had never seen before. Others were hand sewing tunics to wear to the next gathering. They were all ages from about 15 through my age. The 15 year old was dressed as a wench serving the wine behind a big bar. Not sure if my friend will join. It might be fun, but sounded like a bit too much work for me at this point.

Soo…tomorrow I plan to check out the Y. Still feels weird.

  1. Our area has a group that does the Middle Ages; they show up at the colonial houses during their programs sometimes and set up. I personally feel they detract from the authenticity of the colonial period programs as they are earlier and European. Besides which, they seem to be rather a strange bunch. My daughter managed to get on their email list; something silly about an adult man who signs all his emails as Sir Henry.

  2. Wow, that actaully really appeals to me - well not the part that soclose wrote about, but the creative aspect of it. Sometimes I feel starved for conversation (fancy that! I’m surrounded by people all day). Your first days of retirement, so far, sound quite nice. I can imagine it must feel a bit strange. I was just looking down at my hands, for some reason, and thinking about how much of my life I spend here at the old keyboard, and how many times my work/my job has left me feeling diminished and wrung out and very unhappy, yet, if I didn’t come here every day, who would I be? Work is a big part of the equation of how I define myself - and yet, that’s only because I let that happen without really thinking about it. Maybe you’ll be redefining who you are in small and big ways? That’s exciting.

  3. The retirement started off with a big bang. I am so envious!!!

    Enjoy and take care,

    iniya
