I Eat Real Food

I’m into REAL FOOD. I don’t eat fast food, or at chain restaurants, and I rarely eat junk food. I eat mostly only locally-produced, sustainably or organically grown, naturally-raised, pastured or grass-fed REAL food. I can barely bring myself to eat food if I don’t know where it came from. I almost never eat fried food.

I read the book Real Food: What to Eat and Why, by Nina Planck several years ago, and although I was already shopping locally and a member of a CSA, it changed my life. Only a couple of times a year would my husband and I submit to the allure of a drunken stop at White Castle, or stop at a fast food joint on a road trip. But I don’t and won’t do it any more. I will go to a grocery store and buy bread, cheese, fruit and veggies to eat on the road. I’m proud of this, and know that because I know how to eat healthy (and I have enviable access to great local foods), they key to weight loss and maintenance is in my pocket.

So why am I so fat? I feel like a healthy person. My cholesterol is great, I eat great food (albeit too much of this amazing olive oil and farm fresh butter that should be illegal, it’s so good). Well, I love home-baked goodies and sweets; those are my big weakness. And, I like booze. I admit it. I love beer. GOOD beer. I could no sooner drink a bottle of mega-light lawnmower beer than I could eat a Big Mac. And I love a good cocktail. And I love champagne, and I love red wine. Oh, now I get it. There are the empty calories I so smugly don’t eat, right there in my glass. I also haven’t been exercising, and sit in front of a computer all day (and night).

But I’m making a change and am willing to forgo a lot of this stuff, or at least cut way way back, in order to get myself in a healthy weight range. I’m exercising and loving it. I enjoy the muscle pain that means it’s working.

So, the perfect recipe for weight loss…I’ve got all the ingredients, and I know how to make this dish. Let’s see how it turns out, shall we?
