Oh Bother!!!

Yah, I feel like Eeyore. I had a rough winter weight-wise. I gained about 17 pounds. Mwi this morning was 243. Oh bother!

I am really going to try to turn this train around. I feel like crap. My pants are so bloody tight. And these are my 22W pants. Not the 20W pants that hang in my closet with the tags still on.

My goals for May:

  1. Pull myself out of the winter doldrums.
  2. Don’t be such a slug in the evenings. Do something – go for a walk, clean the kitchen, clean a closet, do something outside – anything.
  3. Get my eating back on track. Lose some weight. I need to lose probably at least 20 pounds before the September Alaska cruise to have any hope of fitting into my beautiful gown.
  4. Take my vitamins every day.
  5. Eat 2 fruits a day.
  6. Cut way back on the granola bars and other crap. This was really getting out of control.
  7. No more donut/mocha runs to Tim Horton’s.
  8. Get a pedicure and start wearing sandals and capri pants to work. That always makes me feel better.

That’s it for now. I will report back at the end of May and see how I did.

50 pounds gone!

Wow! It has been a long time since I updated my blog. I’m glad it wasn’t deleted. Today I finally reached the 50 pound mark – I now weigh 224.

I am amazed that I have lost this much in the past month. To be honest I can’t take all the credit for the loss. Some was due to being sick and feeling crappy over the holidays. And a few days in January too, I guess. Some of the time, even though I was not actively sick, I just had no appetite. Zero. None. I had to force myself to eat something because I knew I needed to. One of these days I may do a blog about my gastroparesis. It is not very common, and consequently not very well understood by most people. Even doctors.

Anyway, I got some new clothes with my Coldwater Creek gift cards in 20W. The jackets and tops fit well. The pants fit, and I can zip them, but not comfortably yet. I can’t stand my pants being tight, so they will have to wait a bit. Plus, I need to hem them. They are actually too long! Amazing! I measured the inseam and it is 35″. This was the Tall size. I have another order on the way with more pants, but they will probably be the same.

The Evil TOM Craving Monster

For about the last week I have been battling (and not to successfully) food cravings that are TOM related. Some months they don’t bother me too much, but this month was brutal. It is not hunger, it is just an undeniable urge to EAT. Anything, but preferably carbs. And sweet carbs are even better. I have been eating a box of cookies that a client brought to the office for Christmas. Thankfully they are all gone.

I got to wondering what causes these cravings. I found this article that describes it quite well. http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=56732

Apparently it is due to cortisol and serotonin imbalances due to fluctuating levels of estrogen.

Ways to combat PMS cravings, according to the article:

  • Eat complex carbs
  • Avoid processed sugar (yah right!)
  • Try foods high in essential fatty acids
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Shun salt
  • Avoid fat
  • Limit caffeine
  • Eat six small meals
  • Avoid stress
  • Abstain form alcohol
  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Have a routine
  • Exercise

Alrighty then! Next month I am going to try to follow these points better.

Hopefully my grazing, munching and foraging have not caused too much of a weight gain. We shall see once TOM passes. I have a food plan laid out for today, and I am going to stick with it come hell or high water! I have a goal to end the month at least one pound down from where I started it, so I can’t let this derail me.

Not much new to report. Not a stellar month, but any loss is good, I guess. We got a treadmill, and while I still need to force myself to exercise, at least I am getting some exercise. I can feel my fitness level increasing a bit already. It is actually a very nice treadmill with a small TV in the console. We can only get a couple of channels and they are fuzzy, but it is enough to keep you amused for the time you are on it.

Whoo Hoo – A new Chickie!

Yay! I got to put up my “35 Pounds Lost” Chickie today as my avatar on 3FC. That means another 5 pounds lost for 35 pounds total. I know it sounds silly, but I find them motivating.

This also means I am out of the 240’s (239). I can hardly believe this is happening. That I am making it happen. Sometimes it almost seems too easy. The hard part was getting started. I just hope I can keep it going through the winter. Winter is always the toughest. I usually gain weight every winter from January to late Spring. I will be happy if I can maintain this loss and come out the other side next summer at about the same weight. I know exercise is going to help me do that, so that is why it is so important for me to get started on some kind of exercise.

We are going to look at some treadmills today. There are a couple of used ones on Kijiji that look good.

Had a small stumble off the wagon this month (and a 2 pound gain one week), but managed to get back on track (Thank God!) and keep going. I was starting to get that “screw it, why bother attitude”, but pulled it together just in time. I credit this with posting on 3FC. I posted a message on the 50+ forum and sort of buddied up with a lady and we got back on track together. That message board is a godsend!

Back from vacation

We had a good trip, despite a couple of rough spots. The resort we stayed at in Cancun was really nice, and the weather was great, for the most part. Had a small brush with Tropical Storm Ida, but nothing too serious.

I had a few days of the Stupid Stomach Sickness (gastro paresis), so did not enjoy it as much as I would have otherwise. It really takes the fun out of travel, and I told DH it may be my last trip as the anxiety of travel (however small) brings it on.

I guess the up-side of being sick is that I lost weight on the trip. Weighed 240 when I got home, but I know some of that will rebound when I get back to eating and drinking normally. Probably around 243-244. Hoping to be out of the 240’s by the end of the month.

Talked to DH again about the treadmill/gym situation. He said he would probably use a treadmill, so I think that is the way we will go.

We get our new couch/chair this week. yay!!!

Will probably do a Progress Report next weekend.

10 % Milestone

When I used to go to Weight Watchers they made a big deal about losing your first 10%. Well, since I started at 274, and have now lost 27 pounds I have my 10%. They give you a key ring. So, here it is! My virtual reward for hitting 10% lost.

I saw a jacket on Coldwater Creek’s website that I love. Might have to make it one of my rewards. It will look a lot cuter in a smaller size, so I will save it for later. Maybe when I can fit into the regular sizes.

I still haven’t been writing down my calories anywhere. I might need to get back to that soon. I guess as long as I am still losing it is OK. I started reading Tom Venuto’s book this week. I think that it is going to be good. He takes a common-sense approach that I like.

Still torn about getting a treadmill versus forcing myself to get back to the gym. On the one hand I am wasting almost $50/month on a gym membership that I don’t use. On the other hand I might not use the treadmill either. If we had a bigger house I would be tempted to put it in the living room so I could use it while watching TV. But, it would have to go in the basement.

That is about it. We are having stuffed salmon from Costco for supper. Mmmm!
