Thoughts on Food

I want to write negative things - I do, then I erase them. Who wants to read downers?

I’m take an anti-depressant, otherwise I act out, become obsessive-compulsive about worries, get ultra controlling and on and on. So the Zoloft helps with that. But sometimes you ask what changed when a life changing behavior starts, and one thing that changed for me was the Zoloft dosage, which went up.

I wonder if there are other effects of large doses of serotonin?

How much do we fool ourselves?

Blind Denial, like the Emperor’s New Clothes. I ate it but it doesn’t “count.” I’m under my target for today anyhow, so it counts toward that. I only had a spoonful. I didn’t measure, I just eyeballed it!

So, an experiment. Going to work grab a small latte made with skim milk, no sugar added…  Walk by the receptionist’s desk and take just one mini dark chocolate from the dish - feel good you only took one! At midmorning, eat the fruit you brought with you for morning snack, half of a small banana and 10 raisins. After lunch, your office mate shares his fresh strawberries–you have half a dozen. After work, as dinner cooks, have 14 baby carrots, which you dip into just 2 Tablespoons of red pepper hummus.

ONE very small chocolate, some nonfat dairy, fruits and vegetables. Good choices overall. You had 262 Calories, 50 Calories from Fat, 5.5g Total Fat, 290mg Sodium, 45g Carbohydrates, 9g Fiber, 33g Sugars and 8g Protein. Instead you could have had two and a half of those small bags of ”100 calories” crackers or cookies (and probably two or three times the Sodium, none of the Fiber, and a fraction of the Protein.

Did you burn it off with a 60 minute, arm swinging walk?

Some of my initiatives are working… I have much greater variety of fruits and vegetables in the house now that they’re more “in season”–there are more berries available at lower prices, more fruits, more green vegetables. Last night I had a delicious bowl of chirashi - seasoned sushi rice topped with surimi, shrimp, chopped red bell pepper, cooked asparagus spears, nori flakes, sprinkled with some soy sauce. Thought I’d died and gone to heaven, it was so good!

Have been making red hummus in the blender with canned garbanzos, a full TBSP of tahini, 2-3 cloves of garlic, half a cup of a mild version of harissa or a paste made from roasted red peppers, hot peppers, Middle Eastern spices, plus the juice of a half lemon, salt… thinned with the juice the garbanzos are packed in. This is terrific as a vegetable dip, and is yummy on WASA crispbread crackers. In place of the red pepper paste, any tapenade from olives, or olives and tomatoes is yummy too. Esp Kalamata olives.
