booze + car = death!
Tonight I had my fourth trauma code in less than a week! My second fatality. I am so tired of this, why will people not learn that getting behind the wheel of a vehicle when you have been drinking is fookin stupid???? Add the speed, no seat belts and it is just a matter of time before disaster strikes.
Thursday it was a 14 year old. He will now be 14 forever, he will never be 15 or 16, he will never graduate from high school, he will never go to college, he will never marry, he will never father children, and his parent will never kiss him good night again. He is dead. He was driving a stolen vehicle, and the 16 year old with him is permanently brain damaged. He will never wake up. Tonight it is a young man, a John Doe. We worked so hard to bring him back but the damage that a cement wall can do is awful. Then we call the code and take him to the morgue. We don’t know who his family is, we don’t know who he is as he has no ID on him. So tonight a family sleeps not knowing that when they awaken, the world they knew will never be the same. Tonight a young man lies in a cold morgue and no one knows his name……….fook!
20 years working trauma, you would think I would be immune to it by now. Instead I sleep with the faces, the battered faces and the shattered lives, they share my bed every day. Sometimes they are quiet, but they are always there. I will never forget, I don’t want to forget, it is important to remember, even the ones who have no names.
