I am 100% totally and completely in agreement with our Ruby Jean! R is clearly one of those guys who takes the easy way out - does what he figures to be in his own best interests, period. You can't love him, Ini - he isn't worth your baby finger! Ruby is also spot on about making yourself into the best you can be. The year I divorced my ex, I started exercising daily, walkiing everywhere that it was feasible for me to walk, and the more in shape I got, and the more I pampered myself with facials and massages, and wonderful creams and lotions and bubble baths...and lacy bras and matching panties...AND started listening to music again, which I hadn't done in a long time...AND started meditating daily, which is something else I hadn't done for a long time...why, the better I felt about myself, and the happier I was that I was finally free of that awful relationship.
Who was it that said "Living well is the best revenge"? I forget. But whoever it was had it right. So long as you are feeling - and look like you are feeling - miserable, the more you puff up that dumbass's ego. Don't do it. Seriously. You can walk away from this (and hopefully into a new job...AND a new and happier life) with dignity and self-respect, and without giving R the satisfaction of thinking that he was/is so important to you that his being with someone else (before YOU are with someone else) is a tremendous blow to you. NOW is the time for strength, my dear, dear girl....NOW is the time to stand up for yourself, do what's good for YOU, and move on from this distasteful mess. He is SO not worth it! Think bigger, Ini. You don't want someone professionally inferior to yourself; Most men's egos can't handle that, and you're the one who suffers when they feel insecure. You need to aim higher and NOT settle for less than you deserve. You don't NEED to be in any relationship until the right one comes along. In the meantime, look after and take good care of YOU! For however long you have to continue working with R, do as Ruby says...cooly professional, nice, light, no indication whatsoever that he has meant anything more to you than any other person that you supervise.
Happy 2008!
Love,
E!

Oh sweetie, I'm so sorry. Please believe that the pain will lessen in time, and eventually you'll look back and be thankful that he wasn't the one for you after all.

Yes, Owwwwwww. Oh Iniya, that's awful. At some point, I hope you are able to look back and know in your heart that if you had stayed with R. you were in for a lot of hurt, from his family, from him...he may be a nice person on most levels, but he doesn't sound as strong as a woman wants her partner to be. He would not have stood up for you when they were rude or slighted you, he would have put his own feelings first, he may have resented you without telling you truly that you are ahead of him at work. His parents may have had this girl lined up for him all along, as parents will do. You're going to move on and up. You're going to find that right person. YOU are going to CHOOSE Happiness.

I'll tell you a secret....there is a side of my personality that roundly endorses the "don't get mad, get even" school of thought. I did this once, myself: A good revenge is to make yourself look as gorgeous as possible, not too affected by the break up....like a woman who has plans for herself, and confidence. Go to that gym! Eat those veggies! Drink that water! Gloss your hair, put a mask on your skin. Add something really pretty to your wardrobe, or buy a piece of classy jewellery. Wear really beautiful underwear that, of course, only you know about! Wear a subtle but utterly beautiful perfume - not too much, but just enough. When you walk past, something soft and lingering will be your signature scent. It's amazing how this makes you feel. Paint your toes a deep magenta. Make yourself glow. Walk into that office feeling beautiful, like you own it - even if you're not feeling it at first, just the act of doing it will seep into you, and you will feel confident. Be light and nice and utterly professional to R. Don't make this too too obvious, just start off lightly. This will attract people to you like you wouldn't believe!

Okay, corny, the stuff of B-movies, but it helped me once.

LOVE, your big sister!
