My first attempt at yoga…

So I had my first attempt at Yoga yesterday!

I can’t lie, I had some “preconceived notions” as to what Yoga would do for me. I am ashamed to admit that I thought Yoga would be “easy” and not much of a workout. BOY WAS I WRONG!!!

I took the advice of some 3fatchicks.com members and ordered my first Yoga DVD from Amazon.com, called “Introduction to Yoga” from Yoga Zone. I lit some candles and incense (I know it sounds cheesy, but they help me relax) and popped in the DVD. I did 30 minutes and learned some of the basic Yoga poses, like the mountain pose and downward facing dog (and yes, it looks as pornographic as it sounds). I must say that I totally felt it in my muscles when I finished! I am one of the most inflexible people that I know, so I’m really hoping that it will help me with my flexibility.

Also, it helps me realize that I really don’t understand the concept of deep breathing. Why is that? Deep breathing should be simple. For whatever reason, I can’t do it properly! That’s one of the things I have to work on, too. Hopefully once I master deep breathing I can use that in other exercise areas, such as cardio. I notice that on my “good” running days I find a rhythm and I can control my breathing well. On the bad days, it’s usually because I can’t find my “center” and my breathing is rough and ragged.

I’m off to buy a Yoga strap today. Wooo hooo for yoga!
