I wish I had a good map of Tennessee that I could show you for this one. Maybe you are familiar with the state. If not, you may want to look like at a map. We should have
Friday morning 5:45am: I met my friend at her house so we could go pick up the rental car. We get to the place and find out they can’t rent us a car b/c we are going out of state. So now we have no rental car and no reservation anywhere. It became the great rental car hunt. Luckily we live in Orlando and there are rental car places aplenty. We find one at the 3rd place we tried, and we got on the road only about an hour behind schedule.
We get to Pigeon Forge, TN at a decent time. We had time to go to Walmart to get some groceries and find the cabin before we had to leave for the airport to pick up the other 2 girls. We have directions from the airport to the cabin, but not vice versa. So we are reading the directions backwards pretty much. The whole trip should only be taking us 2 hours round trip. We start off heading in the direction we think we need to be in…. through Great Smokey Mountain National Park. Up the mountain we went… down we came on the other side.. IN NORTH CAROLINA!!!! We were trying to get to Knoxville. Want some perspective, here’s a map. See where Pigeon Forge is? See where Knoxville is? Yeah, we went totally the wrong way. Of course we didn’t know we were in North Carolina yet. When we finally got off the mountain, my friend went in to a hotel to ask directions. When she came out, she said… “I knew we were in trouble when I asked the girl how to get to Knoxville and she just shook her head.” Uh oh. Someone did know and they gave us directions… without telling us how far we actually were. We didn’t want to go back up the mountain b/c one of the girls with us was getting sick but we should have. So off we went, blindly following directions. We are now about 1 1/2 hours behind schedule… and we had told the girls we’d be there in 15 minutes when we talked to them the first time. All was going well until we saw a sign… KNOXVILLE 91 miles. WHA?!! My friend was driving and I was in the front seat… we both just looked at each other in shock. 91 miles?!! It was too late to turn back by this time.. better to just keep going. So we did. I think we finally made it to the airport about 1am. We should have been back and drinking by this point. We finally got back at our cabin at 2:30-3am. UGH!! We should have been snozzled (my new favorite word) by that time!! A 2 hour trip took us about 6 hours.
Really, it wasn’t that bad — except remember that I was in girl hell. Me, I like adventures. That was an adventure. Yes it was annoying, yes it was even a little scary up in the mountains in the middle of the night, and it was actually sort of humorous. There were points that my friend and I just looked at each other and burst out laughing (like when we saw the 91 mile sign). But there were 2 other girls with us and ALL THEY DID WAS COMPLAIN. *shudder* Come on!! If you can’t see the humor in it, there is no hope. And they were all like, I never want to go back on the mountain again…
Well, guess how we had to get to rafting the very next day. BUWAHHAHAHAHAAHHA!!!!!
