First day at the gym
Journal, June Goal June 2nd, 2008I really hate gyms sometimes. There are just so many people and even though I know they aren’t all staring, I feel they are. But anyway, today was the first day at the gym. I ran on the treadmill today. Not sure if I was doing something wrong, but it seemed REAL easy. Makes me nervous.
For you treadmill runners, how fast do you go? I was at a 4.6 pace, and actually bumped it up to 4.8 for my last 2 runs. I felt like I was running at the same pace I do when I run outside, but I’m not sure. It seemed too easy. Any help from you guys would be great.
My eating plan was GREAT today:
Breakfast: shredded wheat, f/f milk, 1/2 banana - all core
Lunch: couscous and veggie bake, watermelon - all core
Snack: apple - core
Lunch: Taco Salad: lettuce, lean ground beef, kidney beans, tomatos, fat free cheese, fat free sour cream, salsa — all core
WOO HOO!!!! I feel good too. My husband met me at the gym and when I was done with my run, we did some weights. He wanted to do legs, but I refused since I had just run (um, hello?!) We did arms instead. I wasn’t able to do much weights since the kids club was closing and I had to get the little ones. But all in all it was good.

i usually do 5.2 for running and im not a really good runner or anything..i actually hate it but that is a good speed for running and then walking should be at about 4.0-4.2

Ahh. That is so cool. Having your husband there with you at the gym would make it all so much better. If that becomes routine, you are so much more likely to go and go often is my guess. Good for you. Your running numbers sound fine to me. I dont speak with the experience that bigprof or periwinkle have, but I am guessing what they are going to say is to let your body decide what pace is best for you. I am looking forward to seeing how it feels to run on a treadmill - I know that most people say that it is different. And look at that food for the day! That ticker is going to be moving at your next weigh in for sure!
I was inspired by your burgers with jalapenos from a few days ago, so I had to have a burger this evening. I used lean beef, some beefy onion soup mix and tried mixing some unsweetened applesauce in to make it juicy then grilled them and had them on a “flat-out” flat bread with a bunch of vidalias and canned jalapenos. I have a stomach of steel.
But it was yummy!

I keep it on 4.2-4.6 for the runs, & push it up to 4.8 & 5.0 when I’m bored & want the run to end, but I’m also only 5 feet tall & I think that makes a difference.
But, yeah, whatever feels right to you. When I was working my way through the first few weeks, I’d play around with the speeds quite a bit: lower speed at the beginning of a new week, higher at the end. There’s no right way, I think. I think if it feels like running to you, it’s running.
Getupnow’s right: trust your own body with speed. & if it was easier, it could be the treadmill, but it might also be that you’re getting stronger.

Yes, I have been told that running on a treadmill is easier than on the ground because the treadmill is doing the work for you basically. Thanks for the input guys!!

PROUD OF YOU!
And yes - a treadmill is easier - b/c you don’t have to “push off” your weight when you run on it. Outside your body weight has to be moved.
BUT - it is still INCREDIBLE speeds you are doing already!
