Eileen - Day #253 - Monday
Daily intake goals::  20-35g carbs / 64+ oz. water
Total net carb grams today:  22.0
————————————————————————————–

I got me two o’ them there stars today!  =D  One for eating on plan and one for the hour of exercise I put in during Dancing with the Stars tonight.  I did a half-hour on the elliptical and then a half-hour on the exercise bike.  Tomorrow I’m gonna try to double that!

By the way, I’m still scale-free.  I plan on weighing in this Saturday morning and I’m starting to feel what I was hoping to feel - the pressure of the impending weigh-in.  Because I’ve been weighing in every day, I don’t actually expect much of a change every day — but weekly, that’s another story.  I haven’t seen a downward trend in weeks but THIS week I wanna see some progress!  And I know that ain’t-a-gonna happen unless I put in some significant exercise time.  And this measly little hour-per-day isn’t enough.

I need to start, though, by getting enough sleep at night.  I’m a night-owl, always have been, and I don’t require ten hours of sleep every night but I feel it if I don’t get about seven.  I am lucky to have a job that allows for a flexible schedule, but often I can’t sleep in as late as I’d like in the morning and then after work I’m t-i-r-e-d and the last thing I feel like doing is exercising.  Like tomorrow, I have a lunch appointment so I need to be at work by 9:30am to get some stuff done before the lunch.  Yet here it is 1:00am and I’m nowhere near ready to go to sleep!  I’ll probably settle down around 2:30 and then be up by 8:30 - and on six hours sleep I’ll be all omg-i’m-too-tired-to-exercise come tomorrow night.

One reason I’m up so late is because my hubby doesn’t get home until 11:30pm.  He doesn’t have to be anywhere in the morning so he stays up late - and we go to bed together so we generally don’t get to sleep before 2:30 or 3:00 in the morning.

I’m gonna try to scale it back a little at a time.  Starting tonight I’m gonna try to be in bed by 2:00.  Then tomorrow I’ll shoot for 1:30.  I think putting sleep as a priority will help a lot.

Eileen - Day #252 - Sunday
Daily intake goals::  20-35g carbs / 64+ oz. water
Total net carb grams today:  22.8
————————————————————————————–

Hubby and I had a lazy Sunday morning/early-afternoon and it was heavenly.  We watched movies and TV from the comfort of our bed and didn’t surface to face the world until it was going on 4pm!  We were just a bit hungry by then (!) so we took our youngest son with us and went out to dinner.  The place we went to has really really good blackened chicken, so I had a caesar salad with chicken (dressing on the side, no croutons - gosh that sounds very familiar, ha!) and it was very very good.

Then we had some shopping to do and did our usual Sunday-night-grocery run.  I had a late-night snack of cauliflower!  That still cracks me up that for so many years I have “not liked” cauliflower and now that I’ve discovered that I actually DO like it, I like it so much that I consider it snack food!!!  Too weird!!

So, no exercise today either.  Hubby’s neck is a bit better but still stiff (he can’t turn his head to the right without pain) so I nixed the bicycling idea (he was willing but I didn’t think that would be too safe or too smart).  It’s okay, it was the weekend - I’ll get back in the game, so to speak (!) this week in the exercise department!  Gotta catch up, I’m getting behind in stars!!  =D

I’m still enjoying this March Challenge!  I love the feeling that I’m not alone, that there’s a whole group of us working out “together” (I know we were all working out before, but now for some reason it feels more like a group thing)!

WE ARE HALF-WAY THROUGH!!!

Today is (was) the 15th, so we are midway throught the month AND ITS STILL ANYONE’S GAME!!  An extra hour a couple times a week and anyone ANYONE could pull ahead!  Ms. Brseay is currently in FIRST place and is about to pick up her THIRD green star WOOOHOOOO!!!

Eileen - Day #251 - Saturday
Daily intake goals::  20-35g carbs / 64+ oz. water
Total net carb grams today:  33.4
————————————————————————————–

This time I really did it - or should I say I DIDN’T do it!  Wooohooo I totally did not step on the scale today!  I think it’s so funny that I’m actually celebrating this!  It just really bugged me yesterday that I felt like I was giving in to an addiction!  I don’t smoke anymore, so nicotine doesn’t control me.  I don’t eat everything that happens to catch my eye anymore, so carbs don’t control me.  I don’t need a stupid scale to control me, not even for one moment!!

Hubby woke up yesterday with a stiff neck and today it’s even worse, so when I suggested riding our bikes up to Books-A-Million, he declined.  Bummer.  =(   I hope he’s feeling better tomorrow!

So instead we put the top down on my Mustang and drove around to garage sales.  That was fun.  Hubby actually found a couple things - me, I bought two books at 50 cents each.  Paperbacks, way overpriced for a garage sale in my opinion.  *Throws head back*  *Hmmph!*

We went out to lunch at this little local family-owned restaurant that has - honestly - the best vegetable soup in the entire universe!  LOL!  Whenever we go there, my first question is always: What are your soups today?  Only a couple times in the past eight or nine years have they not had vegetable as one of their choices.  It’s very popular.  Anyway, I had a caesar salad with chicken (dressing on the side, no croutons, took more than half of it home) and not one but TWO cups of vegetable soup!  Next time I go there I’m going to ask to take home a large container of soup - it would have been awesome with the salad I polished off at dinnertime.

So I did good for food today but never did put in any exercise, other than driving my stick shift, ha, and getting in and out to visit garage sales!

Eileen - Day #250 - Friday
Daily intake goals::  20-35g carbs / 64+ oz. water
Total net carb grams today:  23.1
————————————————————————————–

I did.  I did it.  I stepped on the scale.  I regretted it as soon as I did it - and not just because my weight was the same again.  I have no idea why a freakin’ SCALE tempts me like this!  WHY do I have to HAVE TO know???  Ohhhhh I sure lived without knowing back in the day when I was letting myself eat whatever whenever I wanted!  You couldn’t have dragged me onto a scale then.

I just wanna see if it makes a difference in how I perceive my own efforts.  I’ve been exercising every single day since starting this Challenge thing and I’m not seeing a direct correlation between that effort and the scale.  If I wait a week, will I feel compelled to work harder during that week so I can be all happy about the cumulative loss I’ll see?  I guess this is what I’m hoping, but I’m a little scared.  I haven’t lost any weight in weeks.  If when I finally weigh in, I don’t see a loss at all, I’m gonna be really disappointed.

See what’s happening to me here?  I gave this whole speech yesterday about how I don’t want to be focusing on my WEIGHT, and so to that end I want to take the scale away — and now my WEIGHT is all I can think about!!  I feel like by weighing in only once a week, I’m putting even more emphasis on the weigh-in being my real measure instead of the effort itself!

Well if I don’t give it a real try, I’ll never know.  Will not weighing in every day make a difference in my own daily motivation and perspective?  Can’t hurt to try, so tomorrow I’m gonna give it another shot.

I think maybe I should ask Hubby to hide my scale!  =D

Starting weight:  285.2    Daily intake goals::  20-35g carbs / 64+ oz. water
Weight Last Entry:  237.0    Weight Today:  237.2
Change today::  +0.2 lbs.         Loss-so-far:   -48.0 lbs.
Total net carb grams on Thursday:  23.7
————————————————————————————–

Only one star for me today.  I got caught up in some stuff at work and didn’t stop until after 11pm.  Hubby gets home from work at about 11:30 so I went right to the kitchen and made him some peanut butter cookies (the only kind of cookies he really likes).  What torture that was, ha!  At over 10g carbs each, I couldn’t even have a single cookie.  I took one tiny taste off the empty mixing bowl, probably the equivalent of a half a carb, lol.

Shoulda seen the smile on his face, though, when he saw I’d baked him cookies.  Totally worth it.

I was leaving a comment earlier today on beerab’s blog and it made me think.  Sometimes you do everything you’re supposed to do - you stay on plan with your food, you drink a truckload of water, and you sweat your ass off working out - and still the scale won’t budge.  It’s okay for a short period of time but it has the POTENTIAL of being disheartening if it goes on too long.  Okay so this is what got me thinking…

I have no real control over what the scale says.  The PHYSICS of human metabolism (calories in, calories out), those physics are real, but regardless of one’s level of understanding of those physics, our body, the machine we live in - is so complex, its systems so intertwined, that the outcomes are extremely hard to predict.  And hard to accept or understand.  Sometimes.  Most of the time.

So if we truly have no control over the extent of the earth’s gravitational pull on the solid mass of our body - why do we stress so much about our own culpability - our own blame - our own guilt - for not having a particular desired effect or control of it?!?  Because it is a simply-obtained measure of our own health, fitness, and yes - outer appearance.

Instead of focusing on the unpredictable, uncontrollable measure of those things (weight), I would much rather focus on those things I can control.  I can control my eating.  I can control the amount of time I devote to exercise.  I wrote this in my blog entry the day I decided to host this March Challenge:

“… the nitty-gritty of “weight loss” isn’t what the scale says, it’s the day-to-day commitment to do two things:  1) eat right and 2) exercise.  So that’s what I made my contest about.  Not about losing weight, but about doing what it takes.”

Now if I can just de-program myself from my reliance on the scale!  I have never been able to NOT weigh in every day - it’s a compulsion, an obsession!  But if I’m truly going to focus on what I can control, I need to stop being so obsessed about that number and whether it moved up or down two-tenths of a pound from the day before.  So I’m gonna give it a shot, gonna practice what I really, truly believe.

Gonna skip the daily weigh-in, try to go for weekly!

Down another pound - I’m assuming this is more of the swelling-water-retention-weight that I was carrying around.  I’m still not down to where I was before but I’m not gonna dwell on that today!  I’m gonna stay focused and positive, after all…

I can do this!
It’s not horrible.
I’m not depriving myself of yummy and satisfying food.
I’m not walking around hungry all the time.
I feel stronger and more agile than I have for years!
I can lose ONE HUNDRED POUNDS!

If I needed PROOF that I really CAN lose a hundred pounds, well, then I found it in hveeck’s blog entry today!!!!!  OMG!!!  WOOOOHOOOO WTG HVEECK ON LOSING ONE HUNDRED POUNDS!!!!  Her pictures that she posted SO inspired me today and gave me HOPE that I really CAN drop a hundred pounds!!!!

WE ALL CAN LOSE THE WEIGHT WE WANNA LOSE!!!  Even if it’s one freakin’ pound at a time!!!

Tonight I popped in the funky-90s-workout-video again.  I did better!  Most of the time I actually kept up with the little skinny people on the screen, but I still stopped it after 30 minutes - it kicked my butt!  It was fun, though!

————————————————————————————–

Yay, this morning I got to see a loss of one of those pounds I gained.  A loss of one is better than none!  =D

I went out to lunch with my co-workers today and had a wonderful lunch of grilled chicken and broccoli, but then afterward for some reason I didn’t feel very well.  We had to do some shopping for office supplies and got back to the office around 4:00, at which time I laid down on the couch and promptly fell asleep.  I didn’t wake up until almost 7:00!!  I felt better though.

I missed the first half of The Biggest Loser tonight but hopped on the elliptical to watch the weigh-ins.  I put in about 35 minutes and just didn’t feel like going any further.  I was just drained and even with the nap I didn’t feel up to anything more in the exercise department.  So today I earned one star for my food and a half-star for exercise.  Yep, that’s all for today, but…

Tomorrow’s another day!

Okay I’m not gonna say anything SPOILISH about The Biggest Loser episode but I will say that I was proud of one particular contestant.  She did the right thing, I think.

Oh, and then before I go, I just wanna share a picture or two of the trail we were bicycling on, on Sunday.

————————————————————————————–

Up again.  UP!!  Since starting this challenge I have had NINE days on plan, have done NINE-AND-A-HALF-HOURS of really intense exercise, and have GAINED THREE-POINT-FOUR POUNDS!!!  ROFL!  Does that SUCK or WHAT?!?  LOL!!!

Nahhhh, I’m not really pissed at all.  I will lose - eventually!!  Right now I’m still all swollen and sore and then after that 15-mile bike ride yesterday I would be surprised if I hadn’t gained another pound!  So did I take a day off today to recuperate?   OHHHHH I was tempted to!  Yeah I definitely would have skipped any and all exercise today … If I wasn’t such a STAR-HOUND!!!  LOL!

In fact, tonight at about ten after eight, I sat down in front of Dancing with the Stars (Darn I was late and I missed Derek & Lil Kim!).  I had a cup of decaf and was curled up on the corner of the couch, ready to be entertained for the next 110 minutes … and I wanted food.  I wasn’t hungry, I just wanted to snack.  So I said to my son (who was in the same room playing an online game on the computer paying absolutely no attention to me and the TV), “I really should be watching this in the other room, and put in some time on the elliptical.”  He, of course, with his headphones on, probably didn’t hear me but I took his silence as agreement anyway.

I put in a half-hour on the elliptical and then switched to the exercise bike for another half-hour (even though my rear is still sore from yesterday, lol).  Did I stop there?  Nope.  After DWTS was over, I put a tape in the VCR - yes - YET ANOTHER 90′S EXERCISE VIDEO!  LOL!

exercise videoThis is definitely my favorite so far!!!  It doesn’t matter that this was made in 1991 - the workout on this tape is hard, really hard, and really fun!!!  I found myself smiling most of the way through it!  I also found myself modifying a lot, but that’s okay because I’d rather have it be too hard at the beginning so I can build up endurance and see my own progress!

I didn’t actually finish the video, and I’m not even sure how much longer it goes, but I stopped at the 30-minute mark.  So that brings me to … drum roll … 90 minutes of exercise for a total of 2 1/2 stars today!  (1 for eating within plan and 1 1/2 for exercise!) Woohoooo!!!

—————————-

I had a conversation with my cat’s vet today and I know y’all will understand my reaction, so I thought I’d share it here.  My cat has a recurring problem with constipation, and during the conversation, the vet said, “The most likely cause of this condition is his obesity.  Cats who are overweight will get constipated, just like humans who are overweight also end up constipated.”

I was like - WHAT?!?  I couldn’t help myself, I blurted out, “I’m sorry but I have to disagree with that statement, I’m WAY overweight and I don’t have any problem with constipation at ALL.”

LOL.  There was this dead silence on the phone for about a two seconds and then he backpedaled and said that overweight cats do commonly have this problem and then he quickly changed the subject.

I ended up taking my cat in this afternoon and I didn’t see the vet until the exit consult.  About five minutes into our conversation he said, “By the way - you are NOWHERE NEAR OVERWEIGHT ENOUGH to have the constipation problem I was referring to on the phone.”

OMG he SOOOO redeemed himself!!!  =D

Hubby agreed yesterday when I mentioned it, that yes! it would be fun to go out on our bikes.  And then when I talked to Kevin (15yo son) he said he wanted to go too.  So this afternoon we got the bikes out, gave them a cleaning and filled their tires, and packed waters (for me and Kevin) and gatorades (for Hubby).  There’s a county trail nearby and Hubby asked me, “Which way?”

I said, “North.”

It was incredibly gorgeous.  In the low 80’s, a warm salty breeze (at the north end, the trail is less than 1000 feet from the gulf), we all caught the infectious good mood that prevailed on that trail.  Although it wasn’t exactly crowded, we must’ve met over 100 people coming the opposite direction and we exchanged hellos with most of them.  At one point Kevin said, “I’m so glad we live in a friendly town.”  Yes, I agreed, we do, but what I didn’t say is that, in my experience, people in most places are friendly to you when you’re friendly to them.  But regardless, it seemed like everyone was in a good mood out there.

Of the three of us, I was the only one with an odometer/speedometer.  We sailed along during the first three miles, our muscles warming and our butts getting reaquainted with our bike seats (lol).  We paused at the entrance to a park to take a drink and then continued north.  Three-and-a-half miles later, we stopped again for a drink and Kevin asked me how many miles we’d gone.  I told him 6.5 and he said, “Wow, I figured we’d be home by six miles and we haven’t even stopped going north yet!”

We went to the end of the trail, which was at about the 8-mile mark.  We went back home then, but not by the same route.  We cut through a cemetary (that was fun!) and then rode on a sidewalk that was one hill after another.  It was a great workout.

Altogether, when we got back home two hours after we started, we’d clocked 15 miles!  OMG now, six hours later, I’m FEELIN’ IT!!!  My thighs, my calves, my abs.  (Yeah under all my fat I do have abdominal muscles, I only know this because they HURT!)

BUT - ya know what?  I feel great.  F’ING GREAT!!

Up another pound BUT I know exactly what it is.  OMG I AM SORE AND SWOLLEN!  Yeah, Kathie Lee kicked my butt yesterday LOL!!!  That’s okay though because tonight I let another 90’s icon kick my butt.  I only remember this one from late night TV - infomercials to be exact.

Hubby and I went to one of our favorite thrift stores today.  This is the one that has the fantastic book selection and I could stay there for hours - but right next to the book section is the video section, and after yesterday’s experience with the KLG workout tape, I scoured the racks for more.  And found this:

Tony workout

Tony Little.  Anyone remember him?  He looked vaguely familiar to me and the name rang a bell but I truly didn’t recognize him until I saw him and heard his voice.  Oh yeah infomercials, that’s where I knew him from.

What I didn’t know - until now - is that he’s a sadistic bastard.  NAHH just kidding!  He did make me HURT though and he sure looked like he was enjoying himself in the process.

Okay, both of these workout tapes were from the same era and I have an observation.  In this tape, Mr. Little was wearing (as pictured here) this shiny spandex outfit and I swear about 10 times the camera zoomed in on his .. uh .. package.  Maybe they were aiming for his amazing thigh muscles.  I hope so.  Anyway, there it was and though it wasn’t .. er .. substantial, it drew one’s eye.

In yesterday’s video, Kathie Lee brought in an expert, some lady who led the workout.  Now I will admit that they did not zoom in on her package BUT … uh … I couldn’t help but notice that this woman had a cameltoe thing going on almost the whole entire time!  I didn’t mean to look there (LOL!) but shoot if you’re a woman you notice that.  (Okay I’m sure if you’re a man you really notice that, but - you know what I mean!)

So my question is this:  Did they do it on purpose?  Was this some weird kind of subliminal marketing ploy or something?  Odd coincidence?

Please don’t say it’s me.  It’s not me.  I swear I don’t go around staring at crotches!  Heheheh!

Anyway, I had another great food day and with the exercise tape and the walking earlier today I got me two more stars, woohooo!
