————————————————————————————–

Well it’s 1:00 in the morning and I’m just now getting to post.  I’m tired!

Mom is doing well.  No one actually knows specifically what caused her to have such severe pain in her leg, but the cardiologist gave us an “educated guess” and said it was probably a blood clot which caused internal pressure on the nerves.  Actually, “blood clot” is not the actual term because it wasn’t actually a clot, it was actually the opposite of a clot.

My mom has a pacemaker and has been on a low dosage of coumadin (a drug that thins the blood) for years.  Her doctor usually keeps a close eye on her I&R levels (how thick/thin her blood is) but for some reason lately she hadn’t been checked.  When she was admitted to the hospital Thursday morning, her I&R was over eleven - it’s supposed to be between 2 and 3.  Because her blood was so thin, the slightest bump to her flesh made her bleed - not open bleeding, I mean under the skin.  She had bruises all up and down her arms and legs, small ones which she swore she could not remember any trauma related to them.

The doctor thinks she bumped her shin and bled, deep down within the tissue.  The pressure of the blood in such a constricted area (there isn’t a whole lot of flesh between your bone and skin on your shin) caused pressure on the nerves resulting in the sensation of severe pain and cramping.

She was very lucky to have had this happen.  The damage to her was minimal and she will likely recover fully.  The damage to her could have been quite severe if she had not come in when she did.  She was already starting to go into kidney failure - and could have bled to death internally from just about anywhere in her body.  Had she had a severe cut, she would have bled out in minutes, her blood was so thin.

There’s a reason for everything.  It definitely wasn’t her time to go.  I’ll tell ya why.

My brother wasn’t going to take her to the hospital.  My mom has recurring gout and when it happens she has severe pain in her legs, very similar to what she’d been experiencing.  I called my brother (who lives 5 minutes from her) to tell him that Mom was really in pain and wanted to go to the hospital and he actually kinda yelled at me for overreacting.  “Yes, I talked to her, it’s gout, it’s no different from any other time, she doesn’t need to go to the hospital!”  He told me to call her and I said I was planning to.

Well, I didn’t call her right away.  Brother said it was gout so I wasn’t worried anymore.  It was getting kinda late so I thought, “I’ll call her back in the morning.”

In the meantime, my mom called him and said, “I think I need to go to the hospital.”  Brother ASSUMED that I had spoken to Mom and told her Brother’s position on that subject and that I told Mom to call him and say she wanted to go to the hospital ANYWAY.  So he came right over (at 10:30 at night) and took her to the ER.

He called me from the ER and said, “Well?  Are you coming here?”  I said sure, but why are you all pissed at me?  He said, “It’s your fault we’re here, you told Mom to call me.”  I’m like - Uhhh I didn’t even speak to Mom!

So anyway, she ended up at the ER because of a misunderstanding.  I don’t believe in coincidence!

——————————–

Ack, for the first time this month, in fact, the first time since our vacation back in January - I went off plan!  OMG WAY off plan!  Now I have the lovely challenge of getting back into ketosis and past the carb cravings!  ARRGGGHH!  I’m supposed to weigh in tomorrow and between the last two days of eating hospital cafeteria food AND not exercising since my bike ride on Tuesday (!!!) I can just IMAGINE what my weight is gonna look like tomorrow!  Yikes!

——————————–

Also, thank you to everybody for all your warm and thoughtful comments!  Your wishes and prayers are all wonderful and appreciated!!  (And they helped a LOT!!)

    Eileen,
I don’t believe in coincidences, either. So glad that your mom is doing better and on her way to a full recovery. Also, hopefully you can start to focus on yourself again and get yourself back on the awesome path you have been on. It’s so hard when a crisis pops up to make good choices, you just make the best ones you can at the time.

Please add 2 stars for me for Friday, 1 for exercise and 1 for food. Sadly, these stars aren’t helping me on the scale but at least it gives me something to be happy about.

  5. inkheartmeg on March 21st, 2009

wow… I am glad she is going to recover form this and hope she doesn’t have the kidney failure in the future. It’s easy to bump a shin or otherwise and not pay much attention it. I gave up wondering where my bruises come from. I’m clumsy and awkward.

Your brother hopefully can see things might be a bit more serious in the future. Good thing your mom didn’t ignore her symptoms and pushed to go.

Hang in there! These bumps come and go.

I ate alot of crap yesterday. I did manage to drink my water and push through an hour of treadmill, thanks to you n your stars! One star for me for yesterday.

One star for food today. Rest day today on exercise so no star for that, but did get to drive to the top of Pike’s Peak - America’s most visited mountain - with son and grands, and, have an (OP) picnic! Sorry I have not made it around your blogs recently and will do if I can soon. Flying out Monday night/Tuesday morning. Delita

  12. inkheartmeg on March 22nd, 2009

HI. Hope you’re doing okay and mom is too.

I got mad at myself for the way I ate on Friday so I put a superwoman spin on it yesterday. Hopefully, I can keep it going.

1 star for eating right and 2 stars for exercise.

  13. Whitters on March 22nd, 2009

So today is the only day since I last updated that I get any stars.

1 for food 1 for exercise.
I’ve just been in such a funk lately. It’s horrible.

  14. delitaagain on March 23rd, 2009

Whitters, but look at you! From a funk to TWO WHOLE STARS in one day! Very glad to see you again! As for me, three stars for Sunday, thanks! Delita

  15. goodlife on March 23rd, 2009

It’s great to hear your mom is doing well! What a crazy story though- I agree I don’t believe in coincidences either!

Stars for 20th- 2, for the 21st- 2, for the 22nd 1- I was so slammed sunday I didn’t have hte energy to workout! I think I posted for the 19th, but two for that day as well :)

  17. jaxie on March 23rd, 2009

You’ll get back into it, don’t worry. Your body will slide right back into ketosis, if you’ve been there for awhile.
You’ve been through the worst of it, sounds like. Take your brother’s comments in stride and move on… it sounds like you already have. Next time he may know better, when he gets sorted out and realizes he was wrong.
Saturday was awesome, I kept to my eating plan and hiked for over two hours then did 2 hours of heavy yard work, raking, gathering branches, pushing 8 full wheelbarrows up a hill and dumping it over. The yard looks great… my arms are a tad sore, but I’ll get over it.
Please give me two stars for Friday, one for staying on plan and one for an hour of exercise, 6 stars altogether for Saturday and and three for Sunday.

I haven’t weighed but already I notice a different in my clothes, so something’s happening.

  18. inkheartmeg on March 23rd, 2009

Been thinking about you. Hoping you’re just taking a few well deserved days off and not having any crisis situations.

1.5 stars for yesterdays exercise. No stars for food.

  19. delitaagain on March 23rd, 2009

Eileen, I’m with the troops here - trust you are well and just busy, you and yours are okay. Take your time and don’t worry about us. My stars for Monday: 1 food, 2 exercise. Tomorrow I leave at 2:00 AM to catch a flight a 6:00 AM, so - not sure when I will check in next or where I will be able to workout once back in NC, but… stay tuned! lol Delita

  20. brseay on March 23rd, 2009

    Eileen,
I hope that it’s not a bad sign that you haven’t posted in a while, prayers are definitely headed your way.

You can add another 1/2 star to me for exercise on Saturday. Talk to you soon :)

  21. Joy on March 25th, 2009
