Fat Tuesday without the fat

First off, I want to thank everyone for their great feedback on my posts.  Your comments have been an inspiration and has helped me stay on track, thank you all.

I had a great Fat Tuesday, without all the fat. In our house, the day before Ash Wedneday, is pancake night.  So in an attempt to honor our family tradition, I had to tweek the ingredients a bit.  I used gluten-free flour for the batter and instead of making pancakes, we made Belgium waffles.  Instead of syrup, I warmed some unsweetened raspberry jam and poured that over the waffles, Oh My, it was awesome!  I didn’t even need butter, the flavor from jam was enough.  It was nice that my family could choose which flavor they wanted and everyone had a special treat. It was also a great way to get rid of the jelly jar which only a smidgen remaining.  I don’t know the calorie count, but I do know that it had to be less than sugar-filled, maple-flavored corn syrup we know as “syrup”.

For those who must have some sort of gooey topping, try Agave Syrup or honey.  The Agave syrup comes in both dark and light and has a mild nutty flavor, it is a bit different.  Just remember, it is a condiment, not a beverage!

Peanut Butter Cup Smoothie!

In my war with aspartame, I have won another battle.  Armed with my trusty shaker bottle, I have created a chocolate peanut butter smoothy! Oh my, this is my new breakfast favorite.  Combine 20oz of unsweetened vanilla almond milk with a packet of PB2 with premium chocolate.  (I found this treasure at my local health food store). Since I like mine a bit sweeter, I added a tablespoon of Stevia, and shake.  Awesome!!

The almond milk has 45 calories per serving and only 1 gram of fat and 6 grams of carbohydrates.  Needless to say, it will fit into any diet program you are working.  Total calories = 160.

In my continued search for healthly diet alternatives, I remembered back when Saccharine was dieter’s only option to sugar. The discovery that it caused cancer in rats was announced it put the dieting world in a tailspin and Aspartame was introduced as a life raft.  They quickly put it in everything from diet sodas to bubble gum so as to not loose the market.  But once again, the product was rushed to the store shelves without considering the effects on the consumer, and this I’m afraid will become a national health emergency.  Don’t take my word for it; I am attaching a link from The Aspartame Toxicity Information Center.  It is a list of responses from individuals who experienced health complications due to Aspartame.  http://www.holisticmed.com/aspartame/adverse.txt

If you are reading my blog, you have probably added only a new recipe to your collection and disregarded the research information as “old news”.  However, there are many who are still ingesting this nasty stuff and are not aware that there are options out there.  Please, don’t keep this a secret; share the information and the blog!  Stay strong, we will win the fight against flab together; and do it without the help of chemical toxins!

The Incentive I Needed

I ran into a friend of mine Monday, and all I can say is she looked AWESOME!  She has lost over 30 pounds using the glycemic index and excersizing at the gym; that was the kick I needed.  I have been using the South Beach diet because it allows me to cook a meal for myself and add pasta or potatoes for my boy’s plate; no-one is the wiser.  However, over the weekend I found the vanilla wafers calling my name, and I was weak.  So, today I brought my gym bag with me to work and I’m off to the YMCA at 6:00pm.  Yep, if she can do it with her busy lifestyle, then so can I.  Plus, I’m hoping the sore muscles will be enough of a reminder that the vanilla wafers are not worth it!

I did try some of the Zevia soft drinks and found the Black Cherry to be the best.  I’m not a big soda drinker, but every once and a while I like to feel like cheating, and this fits the bill.  I found the entire line at Whole Foods for those who are searching.

Chocolate

I live in a house with my husband, two teenage boys and two multi-poo puppies.  You would think that with all this activity, I would not have a weight problem.  No, they are all thin and I’m struggling to keep up with them.  I truely believe that if they wish to loose 10 pounds, it would magically disappear by the next morning;  that is after they have devoured an entire bag of potato chips and a case of sodas the night before.  So how to live with such temptation??  CHOCOLATE

I cannot live without chocolate, to do so would only be existance.  But everyone knows that chocolate is the third rail of dieting, so it is time to think outside the box.  I find my ”chemical friends”, those who will eat aspartame, pour some instant cocoa in their fruit yogurt and create a yummy desert.  Not to be out done, I have adapted their idea and have given it a healthy twist.  I take plain yogurt, a spoonful of stevia, a small amount of cocoa powder (the baking kind) and a couple drops of your favorite extract.  Stir together, and bindgo!  a yummy pudding desert.

I have lost 8 pounds since I took sugar out of my diet; not chocolate, nope, I believe it is a food group and cannot be denied.

Healthy Dieting!

For me, the struggle with dieting was that the tricks and treats in the diet world all contained aspartame.  I would love to snack on those 100 calorie yogurts by Yoplait, but the risks involved with ingestion of the chemical, aspartame is not worth the risk.  Splenda is not an option because of its association to chlorine, so what was I to do?  I had resolved myself to the notion that round is a shape and “getting in shape” was a fool’s errand. Then hello Stevia!  Since Stevia is not the sweetener chosen by the soda manufacturers and Yoplait hasn’t joined the healthy revolution, I decided to create this blog to share our creative ideas to incorporate a natural approach to dieting.

I’ll start… The lady’s in my office are laughing at me as they drink their diet sodas, I’m drinking Kool-Aid in a shaker bottle.  It is a 20oz bottle with my daily flavor of Kool-Aide and two teaspoons of Stevia.  Whamo! instant diet drink with vitamin C to boot.  Since the flavor today is orange, I call it my Orange Martini, shaken not stirred.  At the grocery store here in Cincinnati, I buy Kool-Aide for 6-2quart bottles/1.00.  That’s a lot better than the drink mixes with Truvia (which is a good sweetener too!) at 8 packages/3.00.

I look forward to your ideas…

Hello world!

Hello everyone!  This is my first blog, so please be kind.  I want to loose 30 pounds, but the problem is I refuse to ingest foods with aspartame or sucralose.  In the past that meant by-passing the yummy 100 calorie brownies and Yoplait’s awesome yogurts and living on celery sticks.  With the absence of products and information on diet recipes without the chemical additives, I decided to write my own, so here I am.  I hope that I’m not alone because I look forward to hearing other’s ideas on how to loose the calories without adding the chemicals.
