Mmmm…. SOUP!

Posted by: delitaagain In: New Me

Last night late, I came home hungry and the plan was one of my favorites: Split Pea & Potato Soup!Only, I didn’t have anything for protein.

So, I started cooking in Joy-the-MH (motorhome, used for living not recreating) in the dark, just didn’t bother to start up my lights. Half way through, I noticed among all my mess (yes, it had been an… interesting… week) someone had left some groceries. Only two people have a key, so…

Thank you, Jesus! And there were some turkey sausages which I quickly, sliced, browned and added to the soup.

First cook the split peas, then add some sliced taters, spice it up with a little oil, a few chicken boullion granules, a few grinds of pepper and some sea salt. (Forgot the onion.) Mash and stir with a potato masher for smooth, silky texture (or press through a sieve, or process in a food processor or blender). YUM!! It was delish! I had two big bowls last night and just finished off the last bowl tonight.

Today lunch (late) was a WONDERFUL Reuben sandwich with my favorite kinda pickle spear, thanks to a kind friend, with ginger ale (it showed up with the sausages). And tonight I just finished off that soup.

Also today, tried on some favorite pants from the turn of the millenium, which I wore to Israel in 2001. I remember they were a little too tight then, and, they are fitting me the same way today. Okay, so I may be just a few pounds heavier now than I thought. These are still good but need some mending.

If I lose a handful of pounds and sew up my pants I’ll have some new spiffy gray slacks to wear! WooHoo! Next stop, new black shoes…

And yes, thankfully, I got the mess cleaned up today (whew!) So Joy-the-MH and I are both feeling a lot better.

Play along: Do you have a favorite soup?

Amy’s Tomato Bisque. I’m totally hooked on it!

I really like soups too but my husband is generally not too fond of them.

I’d have a hard time picking a favorite but I’m guessing some kind of asian chicken soup would end up winning…

My favorites from a little hole in the wall breakfast/lunch place is ‘cream of broccoli’ and cream of mushroom’. The owner/cook is Greek (Angelo) and his soups were awesome. Then there was my Mom’s homemade pea soup with ham, YUM!
Wow, I never realized how many soups I like! I can’t forget my Italian Grandma’s homemade chicken soup, with white meat chicken (probably from one that she killed herself), yeah I know, but it is a vivid memory from my childhood! Also with carrots, celery, onion, maybe orzo or some other small pasta. She never used store bought chicken broths or boullion, strictly flavor from the chicken parts.

I decided to make something using the veggies in the fridge and stopped by the grocery store to get some broth. I am being careful to read labels now and was shocked to see that organic chicken broth was 0 calories, 0 protein and a huge whack of sodium. So basically $2.49 for 2 cups of salty water. Huh. So instead I found another use for that roasted chicken I buy every week - I made a pot of broth with the bones that I am sure tasted much better than the store version, added garlic, portabella mushrooms, spinach, hot pepper flakes and a dash of grated ginger. Voila and yummy!

round, my heart goes out to you - a soup liker with a soup non-liker?? yikes! But I’m with you on your fav, too. YUM! Although my friends say “everything is her favorite” so my opinion may not be overly valid. =p

oh, Sandi! Now you are talking girl. You sound like me. And my favorite places to eat are local diners. YUMMMMMM! I’d rather eat there than a five star, well, at least most days. LOL Hey, can I come see ya next time I’m in the neighborhood? That would be fun!

tj, oh, wow. And I guess I assumed the organic broth was the good stuff. Thanks for the reminder that I must read labels. Yikes. I do really enjoy making *something* out of the veggies in the fridge. And sometimes it turns out really special! Wish we could taste test on here.

Last year I got a hankerin’ for home-made mushroom soup. It was totally good. I love mushies. Haven’t made it over the summer because summer and soup just doesn’t seem right to me (I just don’t want to go the whole gazpacho route) but now that the weather’s getting cooler I’m thinking that more home made mushie soup might just be the go.
