Hope For the Future

Posted by: delitaagain In: Fitness| Motivation

My workouts have really been my focus here for the last few weeks. It takes me back…

When I was 22-23, I worked in heavy construction after riding a 10-speed bike 10-20 miles a day. My weight was about 20-30 pounds above where I wanted it, and, it didn’t really come down, at the time.

But later, at 24, I suddenly lost 40 pounds. It was the muscle. I had quit working so heavy and quit eating so heavy (eating for fuel) but I still had all that muscle I had built up, and, MUSCLE BURNS CALORIES!

Suddenly, I was 5′8″ tall and able to wear men’s 29″waist jeans. I was THIN!

So the other day I realized, I may not be losing weight fast now, but I am certainly building MUSCLE! And there will be a pay off.

It really gave me hope that whether the scale *looks like* I am losing or not, I am going the right direction every day I do what I need to do to eat right — give my body the good food that it needs — and exercise — challenge my body to go a little farther, faster and lift a little more.

I don’t need to see weight loss every day to know that I am on my way to a new, thinner healthier me. I am burning fat and building MUSCLE! And, I will get *there* (where I want to be) some day. As long as I stay on this road and keep going.

Thanks to all my lovely faithful readers who inspire me and make logging in a treat and a pleasure! I *will* get out there and catch up on your blogs, too. I will, I will!

What gives you hope?

Muscle is definitely a secret weapon. Whenever a stray away from weightlifting I’m always amazed at how quickly my body makes changes when I get back to it. Do you track your measurements? That can give you a good idea of progress. Also, if/when you’re in the market for a new scale there are several that track body fat and muscle percentages for not very much. I bought mine about 2 years ago right after the 1st of the year (all of that stuff goes on sale then!!) and I think it was about $40. I like it b/c even if the pounds aren’t disappearing very quickly I can see my body fat % decrease. And if nothing is changing it lets me know that I’m not doing something right.

Your attitude is great and really inspiring! And you are so right about building muscle and burning fat. That muscle to fat ratio is key to weight loss.

What gives me hope? Waking up every morning knowing it’s a new chance for a fresh start. Yesterday may have sucked, and who knows what tomorrow may bring. But today, today can be really great! It’s all up to me.

YESSSS!! That’s it exactly!! It’s wonderful that you are building up muscle which will in turn crank up your metabolism and yes! It will eventually lead to quicker and easier weight loss! But in the meantime it’s important to remember what you said up there. We are ON OUR WAY no matter what that scale says every day!

Sooo true that building muscle is a long term fantastic way to burn more calories that if you only do some cardio. Sterling is perfect proof of that.
Keep up the good work!

I love this post. It gives me hope! I look forward to the day I stop looking to the scale for quick, self gratifying results. Thanks for the old story and letting us know how that worked out. Good to hear because I’ve been working out alot and pretty regularly. I could probably step it up a bit but a part of me doesn’t want to. Part of me just wants to ride it out the way I’ve been going. I guess I could increase the speed on the treadmill a litttle. That’s better than nothing. I have taken a couple clases this week, but they actually are borderline easy/lack of challenge. Right up my alley!

This blog entry gives me hope because in the w8challenge, I can see my tally of days I got food right and how much exercise I got and the food days are way short. Hopefully the exercise is building that muscle and helping out. Next month I’ll shoot for more ‘eating right’ days! I’m just happy that I’m getting my red star for April. :D

hey brseay, I’m amazed how quickly my body responds when I come back to weight, too - and I’m convinced it never loses it all. I have done measurements but rarely, I’m measuring “waist-loss” in feet! LOL Right now I am between one and two feet! =D Thanks!! Delita

firefly - I like that! The each day is a new day and just focusing on today (but not carrying it into tomorrow) has become a big part of my life, not only in weight loss but in all of life. You are right, that is a HUGE key, else I would tend to get discouraged and give up. THANKS! Delita

Eileen, I like your quote so much! I’m a hiker, too, and remember that sometimes we head *away* from our goal temporarily but if we stay on the trail we will get there eventually. I really enjoy your attitude and will never be able to thank you enough for your challenges at JUST THE RIGHT TIME in my life!! You are doing so great yourself! CONGRATS on busting through that big plateau! Delita

inkheartmeg - I agree - increasing your exercise too much might not end up being helpful. I think that is what I did this much and too much ends up being stopping for a while which is even more dangerous. I really believe consistency is the key and really want to work toward that. I think I’m going to set some more *reasonable* goals for myself for the May w8challenge. I enjoy reading your stuff so much and REALLY enjoy your attitude about things! Thank you! Delita
