Take Your EYES off the PIES!

What have you learned to avoid? For me, it is foods with aspartame or wheat, or too much sugar — they all trigger cravings and my willpower goes right out the window, for days! It takes about 5 days clean to get any of those out of my system: not worth it!

I’ve also learned not to stand looking at the dessert case or anything else, like advertisements, with foods I don’t want to want. I’ve learned that having my eyes on something increases my desire for it. Next stop: out of control.

What have you learned to avoid?

I avoid energy drinks. I used to drink as many as 3 a day. One day while on this new lifetstyle, I had one. It was a low carb so I guess that means it had that aspartame stuff in it. Well, it triggered a hunger attack like no other and I decided right then and there I didn’t need it anymore. Likewise, I don’t drink diet sodas, and try to stay away from most of the ’sugar free’ stuff.

I also have learned to turn my eyes away from those tempting things like billboards, fast food ads, and the girl scouts at the entrance of the store!

Thanks, inkheartmeg. Good one! When I learned I needed more protein than the average bear, I started supplementing with nutritional supplement drinks. Later a doctor said: “And that’s when you started gaining weight.” I’m thinking he had seen this before. I’m very leery of that kind of stuff now, especially in drinks. Delita

My MIL gained a lot of weight from protein shakes… like 15 pounds! Just from shakes! I have them once in a while, but I always figure in all of the calories. They may sound like a great deal with the protein amounts, but some have a ton of sugar, too!

I am like you… no fake sugar and no wheat. And it’s HARD! Wheat is in everything. There was even wheat flour in my hubby’s Twizzlers. Ick!

I’m not into diet soda as I was in the past. Maybe 8 oz glass once in awhile, not any more than that. What I ALWAYS avoid is anything with caffeine after 12 Noon, or I will be up all night. It has that much of an effect on me even that early in the day. I do have 1 cup of coffee in the morning at home, that’s it for the day.
Delita - are you ready for the move back East?! I love the cartoon!

shallweshrink - it is/was hard, but, it definitely gets easier. I’m eating more paleo now, and have been off wheat enough years that I very seldom cave. Yet, my thought is wheat is the american diet, or, the american obsession. We may almost all be addicted. It I everywhere! Yikes on the twizzlers! LOL Sad. Delita

Sandi, great to see you! How ya doin’, gal? Yep, I’m ready. Very. We should hook up some day. I had to back off caffeine in my early 40ies as I used to really abuse coffee when younger. Now I’m back on a little caffeine in green tea, but, boy/girl I know what you mean. Only herb tea in the last half of the day so no caffeine. Right you are on the diet soft drinks as well. That aspartame is more addictive than caffeine, so glad you have gotten off them. Did you know aspartame sits in the same neuro-receptors as cocaine in the brain? People who are addicted to diet drinks generally refuse to let them go even after they find out that research shows diet drinks lead to weight GAIN. What a racquet these companies have going! I trust you are doing well! Delita

oh, now or bust, mine too! LOL Soft drinks were my last great addiction and Mt. Dew is my nemisis. It is the one that I can’t have even *just one.* Here is how I explain Mt. Dew drinkers. If *normal* people go over to a friends casual party and ask what soft drinks are there, no matter how lame the selection, they will just pick one. If a Mt. Dew drinker comes in and asks, no matter how great the selection, if there is no Dew they will say, “I’ll make a Dew run” and head right back out to the store. It is that serious. Hmmmmm. LOL Thanks for dropping by! Delita

What a fantastic cartoon. Wouldn’t it be great if shows really came w/those warnings? It always makes me laugh to see how many people at the gym watch the Food Network while they’re working out. Are you crazy???

I have really learned to live w/o white flour/sugar. I feel so sluggish when I indulge and it takes a while to get it out of my system. I do allow a “cheat” on Sunday but I have been gradually reducing how much I eat for those reasons. Oh, I live for the day when a chocolate chip cookie holds no power over me :)
