I’ve Learned to be Satisfied with Progress

Posted by: delitaagain In: Lessons Learned

Funny, I almost mis-typed that title as “I’ve Learned to be Satisfied with Success.” But that is not it. I really have “learned to be satisfied with progress.”

My DDIL was sharing her own progress the other day and then followed it up with a comment about “but…” and shared how she hadn’t reached her goal yet. What came out of my mouth was the insight above.

I’ve learned to be satisfied with progress.

It was one of those *wow* moments when I was not sure where *that* came from. Did I say that?

And, I think it is true for me now. But it didn’t used to be true. I used to want to lose 80 pounds by July, or January. If I didn’t stay on track and reach goal by my unrealistic deadline I felt like I wasn’t doing anything.

Every setback threw me off track.

Now, with a little gray hair I’m seeing things differently. Every step is a step, even if I’m *not there yet.* A step off the track doesn’t set me back to the beginning. I’ve still got the progress I’ve made, or, at least the things that I’ve learned.

Wow. I’m not there yet, but I’ve learned to be satisfied with progress and that helps keep me motivated to get back on. After all, I’m not there yet! LOL

Where are you in your journey?

what a good “wow” moment to have!! I guess for the most part i have become satisfied with my progress. Although I am still anxious to get to my goal, but I am totally happy and proud of my weight loss so far. Thanks for the inspiring post :) and thanks for your support on my blog. To answer your question “where are you in your journey?” I would have to say I am a little over half way there, but I am “all the way there” in my mind. Meaning, I absolutely know in my mind that I will do this the rest of my life, I have changed my lifestyle to the point where it has become my new “normal” for the most part, and now i believe its just a matter of time and patience.

You have such great insight! I am now kind of at the same place. Now that I know I’m done having babies it’s not as big a deal if I don’t make my goal by a certain date b/c there’s not a legitimate reason to gain any weight. Sounds silly, but it’s true.

What a great insight. I’m trying to learn to be satisfied with change- not necessarily with weight, but with consistently working at this. Where am I? HA! Considering I’ve been AWOL for a good long while… but I’m back. And this time I really feel as if I can do this. Somehow, I feel that if I can just get under 200 pounds, I’ll be able to do it all. Granted, that’s still 60 pounds away from goal. But I know that this time, if I can just stick with it for 14 pounds, I can make it the whole way. I’m finally learning to embrace small goals :)

LOL. to answer your question, I am not there yet. Love this post. Very insightful. Love it when the right words come at the right time. You’re about 5 weeks ahead of me. The advice to be satisifed with progress is a great one. It’s definetly better to reflect on that then the thing we struggle and wait so long for. A time and place for everything.

I’m a couple of miles away from the finish. I keep hanging out at the rest stations. hahaha. I’ve had and met several mini goals (onederland by halloween, 185 by new year, etc) and my new mini goal was 174 by valentines day. I’m at 178 right now and I’ve been fretting for weeks that this will be the first goal date I hadn’t met. So thanks for this!

neverperfect, great insight: “I’m trying to learn to be satisfied with change- not necessarily with weight, but with consistently working at this. ” The point when I started to focus on *doing* right things rather than reaching number goals is when things started to change for me. Delita

leighish - great analogy! I’m thinking your progress is great! I use a long range hiking analogy, like hiking the Appalachian Trail (over 2,000 miles). Sometimes you need to go into town to do laundry, re-supply, etc. Some days you might get bogged down or even have to back track, but the result is in getting back up and going again. Thanks! Delita
