BMI - In Pictures!

Posted by: delitaagain In: Motivation

BMI is a wake-up call for many but has fallen from grace as a marker. Mainly, because it doesn’t take into account the weight of muscle or make allowance for “large bones.” For example, weight lifters are sometimes categorized by BMI as overweight even though their body fat percentage is low.

You probably don’t hear much about heavy bones, but mine are 99th percentile hardness so I’m thinking they weigh more than average, especially more than the bones of someone with osteoporosis, which are sometimes called “swiss cheese bones.”

But, I digress. Point is, BMI is not necessarily an accurate measure.

Kate Harding put together a collection of images on flickr of people with their BMI. Some may amaze you. I found it very interesting.

Illustrated BMI Categories

Body fat percentage is the by far preferred method of body analysis today, but I haven’t seen a collection like Ms. Harding’s for it.

Does this collection help you *see* yourself? How did it make you feel?

This was really interesting. Although I do have to say, at 178ish pounds, I know I would be classified as obese for my height. I don’t consider myself obese, definitely overweight though. But really, when you look at some of those pictures and weights, some of them DO honestly seem accurate. I’m not sure about the “normal” and “overweight” categories because they seemed kinda crazy, but the obese and morbidly obese didn’t seem that far off the mark.

bosoxfan - that is exactly the reaction I had. Some of the *normal* looked thin to me and some of the overweight sure did not look overweight to me, they looked GOOD! Maybe those had hidden muscle that pushed their weight up but their size stayed down. I’d rather be there than look like I’m on the verge of wasting away. Obese and morbidly obese usually made sense to me, and I’m so grateful to be in the obese, no longer in the morbidly obese category. Yep, interesting. Thanks so much for stopping by! Happy Christmas to you and yours! Delita
