Start Where You Are and Take ONE Step

Posted by: delitaagain In: Lessons Learned

It’s that first step that gets you. Sure, many of us don’t finish what we start. But an even bigger problem is we seldom start the very things we most want to finish.

I’ve learned a secret.

  1. Start from where you are.
  2. Take one step.
  3. Repeat.

Most of us get caught up in the destination, the goal, the fears or the dream. We see only that, or we see this huge landscape we need to cover to get there. We see giants in the land! LOL

We forget that the longest journey begins with just one step. And continues with just one step. And is completed with just one step.

While we’re dreading all it will take to do what we want, we could be taking one step. We can always (in fact we must) take the next step from right where we are, just the *next* step. Don’t let fear rob you.

Believe me, this is the biggest tip I’ve gotten this year. Start from where I am. Take one step, the next step.

If you keep taking steps in the right direction you will eventually get there. It really is that simple.

What works for you?

Absolutely. I think that is one thing I’ve learned (and it only took me 30 years of dieting to learn it!) I was one who always started out with 25 Bad Habits That Must Be Changed NOW! And so of course I’d give up within a week. You can’t change all your bad habits at once. You have to chop through them one at a time. Work on one, and when the new habit becomes second nature, start on another. I’ve changed 5 very bad habits in 2008.

Hard to start a 1/2 mile ahead, cause you still gotta get to that mile marker. Might as well start from right smack in front of you.

I’ve been reading your blog, and your weight log. You are a terrific example of someone who sticks to it and tries to overcome hurdles!! You’re getting there — and you will get there.
