What Motivates You?

Posted by: delitaagain In: Introspection

When I was younger, it was a matter of vanity. As I mature, it is a matter of respect.

(paraphrased from Staging Your Come back, by Christopher Hopkins)

I’ve been thinking much about Aspiring and Inspiring, about the idea that we not only need a dream but desire, and that we are responsible for motivating ourselves.

The day I learned that, I wrote in my notebook: What motivates me? Find out.

Clearly there are days I don’t do the thing I planned, the thing I was determined to do. Perhaps, I just longed for the results.

I’ve been noticing one common thread among diet posts. Motivation. We talk about it a lot.

  • Suddenly, I got motivated…
  • I started off strong, but lost my motivation…
  • I just can’t seem to get motivated…
  • I don’t know why I’m not motivated…
  • If I can just stay motivated…

We know it takes motivation to keep us on course, strong to the end.

But I seldom see anyone talking about where they get motivation. Does it just *come?* Is it in our power or out of our control?

It doesn’t come from the grocery store, and you can’t get it in supplements, either. Not even the *right* diet can give us motivation.

Sometimes we are motivated by anger, shame, embarrassment, but those don’t usually last. Sometimes we are motivated by dreams.

Do we really want our dream enough to make it come true, or are we satisfied with just the dream?

Where do I fit? What am I willing to do to make my dream come true? Where do I get motivation?

My motivation, at least this time, is coming from a couple of different places. To be brutally honest I am motivated by:
1. competition: my younger sister who was always the heaviest of us has lost more than 100 pounds in the last couple of years, through a very healthy lifestyle 180 change of direction. I am proud of her, but I cannot stand the thought of her beating me at anything, and while I know that is exceedingly childish it is pushing me to exercise regularly and hard enough to make a difference.
2. age and survival: in three years I will be finishing my contract and looking for another job - a fat 50-year-old woman will have a harder time finding a leadership position in a career that requires public appearances.
3. fear/guilt: I have taken a lot of health and safety risks in my life and I am worried that some day my luck will run out. Exercising will, I hope, build a cushion to help me survive any reckoning for past behaviour.
